Hello Tom, Sorry to hear you're not feeling well but glad to hear you are still with us. Regarding Hurth (I have one, seems OK now). What do you recommend as a replacement for aCal 36 with a Westerbeke 27? Mike Robinson Holiday Cal 36 #4 Pt. Richmond, CA On 12/19/07, Tom Vandiver <bs… [at] yahoo.com> wrote: > > > >

Of course Mike, you'll have to check things out, but I replaced my failed ZF/Hurth, with a Techno drive Twin Disc transmission TMC40P. This was installed on the Universal / Westerbeke MD-20. To re-gain alignment (different shaft offsets, the drop center of the TMC40 is 68mm and the HBW50 is 62mm) I had to move (shim) the engine at a slightly different height and angle. I did this by installing ironwood pieces under the existing rubber dampened motor mounts... I could have gone without the shims, possibly, as there was adjustment room on the mounts, but the engine was near the top, and tended to wobble a bit too much for my taste. With the shims, it now sits lower on the mounts, and appears much more stable. This is a most excellent replacement and has been done many times, according to Joe DeMers, who sold me the new unit, with a new dampener plate (required to match-up). There where some very small adjustments made for me to accommodate the different position shift lever in my engine bay (grinding back part of the engine bed). I'm very happy that this worked out, as the new tranny has a better friction method in my opinion (cone) and is rated to match my potential HP output under any circumstances.. The Hurth appeared to be suitable "most of the time" just barely... until it burned up. Pleasure Rating: Intermittent operation with very large variation in engine speed. Maximum power capacity is intended only for personal use, planing hull pleasure craft where full engine throttle operation will be less than 10% of the total time with balance of time at 80% of full throttle engine RPM or less. Annual operating hours up to 500. (For TMC transmissions 300 hours/year). Somehow, I 've never associated a "pleasure rating" with engines. Maybe it's just me.
