Re: [Cal_Boats] repower 1974 Cal 29
Hi, Get another opinion from Martec. I have a Cal 9.2 which weights only 7,000lbs but only has a 11 HP Diesel with a 13" folding Martec. Achieving hull speed is not an issue. Remember the pitch is also important. You can go online directly to them, put in your data and they'll respond.
Good luck, but 16" seems way to big.

I would like to replace the Faryman A30 and fixed two-blade 12 inch
propeller in my 1974 Cal 29. The goal is to be able to power the boat
at closer to the 6.5 knot hull speed than the 4.25 knots the Faryman
puts out as well as reduce drag while sailing. I am considering a
Yanmar 3YM20 with a Gori 2-blade folding propeller.
The yard tells me the initial evaluation of the
engine/gearbox/propeller combinations leads to a 16" propeller. The
problem is that there is insufficient swing for the larger prop. One
suggested solution is a different strut and longer shaft to gain the
necessary clearance.
Have others encountered this problem and how did they solve it?
Thanks for your help.
