Hi Patrick!
Beth & I are planning on leaving Marathon, Fl within a month aboard our "new" Cal-40. Most likely heading to Pensacola. We have no experience in these waters so cannot advise you yet, but if we beat you to the water, we'll let you know what we find out. I've been told by reliable sources that the water is shallow and northers suck. I guess we'll find the deep stuff and reef (and avoid freighters, tankers, oil rigs, jet-ski's and monsters of the deep as well). If you beat us to the water, you do the same, OK?

No, we are both originally from SoCal and have lived in the small but wonderful town of Boulder City Nevada (clean green and the only one in the state with NO GAMBLING. The home overlooked Lake Mead and we had his and hers Cals (his 25 mine 27'). We met in 2006 when Michael bought my old boat and I swam over to see if the table I'd worked so hard on was still there. It was, and we've been together almost since then.
We had looked at L'Esprit Libre, but then found Back to Sea in Marathon FL. She has had the mast step issue dealt with already by the previous owner.
So, we sold the house, the boat, the truck, the boat, the car; we bought a 21' 1978 Mini Winnie to haul our stuff and then a 6x10' trailer for all the rest. And away we go across the county to our new home!
We need to put a new bottom job on (Michael's third in a year) and had asked the Cal group about cheaper digs than Marathon - the KOA is $89 per nite! One of the members offered his place in Pensacola. We will meet him in person tonight.
Once we get her done, we have no idea where we are headed. We will have much more once we see the boat. I've only seen Fin Beven's in person and yes, she is truly Radiant.

Wow, you two are jumping right in with a full commitment. It is nice to hear such a story.
Yes, my Cal has some real issues that need resolution. To top off the problem with the mast step, there is the problem with all the dry rot. There is more dry rot in the bulkheads and interior trim then I have ever seen on a boat, but that just sounds like a challenge to me. I am figuring on a full year to do a complete gut and replace all that is rotted.
Let me know how your trip is going, I would be interested in learning more about your adventure. If you get anywhere near Houston, TX, let me know and I will help you in any way I can.
Best wishes,
Patrick

Hey Mike,
I have not started it yet, but I will be sure to post my progress. I have to finish my Bristol before I dig into another project, I am almost done and feeling very proud of it. I am getting sick of sailing in dust and debris so it will be nice to have one finished and ready for some relaxation. I have a feeling that the Cal will be going on the hard for the majority of the reconstruction. I hope that when I am done it will have the look and class of some of the better maintained Cal 40's that are in service.

Beth,
How truly romantical, a romance made by cals!
My girl friend loves to go out in my Cal 24... with one little caveat... that I promise not to untie her from the dock!
I wonder if it is possible to get on the Navy Base, to see the best show in town, the weekly hazing of the new in coming class of Naval Aviator Cadets (poor young college graduate hoggy sand crabs. That would be great fun!! Too bad they probably won't let you see it. It is just like in the movie "Officer and a Gentleman"
My oldest brother told me not to take too seriously what they would do to me upon arrival...he'd gone through Air Force indoctrination summer camp when he took ROTC. So, I probably had a simile on my face at the time, and that pissed them off. So they set me aside for special treatment (special torture). I remember them jamming a survival knife up against my
throat! And yes, others and myself being made to drop down and do push-ups until they were a moaning pathetic wiggling tremorous mass of jelly (called P.T'ing (PT=physical training) your D__K into the ground). Of course us Navy cadets had nice Marine drill instructors. I'm sure what we went through was far far more brutal than Air Force officer summer camp. Oh what fun we were having! What put me at ease was remember that, as bad as it was, it didn't compare to the summer I spent working on an upstate New York dairy farm.

Beth & I are planning on leaving Marathon, Fl within a month aboard our "new" Cal-40. Most likely
heading to Pensacola.

I would strongly encourage anybody with a big restoration project like that to find a spot
and put the boat in a cradle for a while to get the job done. That is what Mark Schraeder
did with Dancing Bear. It was in a barn for a couple of years. Ditto with Seafire. Fin had a
lot of his work done by Dennis Choate while the boat was out of the water. I spent a lot of
money that I could have saved by doing that same way. One problem is that I wasn't sure
the boat was in shape to get to Long Beach where Dennis' shop is.
Good luck,
Mike Kennedy

can see is that it is cheap enough that you are not in as much of a hurry to finish.
