RE: Cal 2-29 Dreaded Beam!
Wilkie2008-01-01 09:57 UTC
We have already heard from Alfred, who along with Roger Jones, blazed the
trail that I followed in replacing my dreaded beam. Alfred's photos and
emails were a great help to me when I tackled mine, and so were Roger's. As
was mentioned, Roger went to a lot of trouble to make a mechanical drawing
of the beam to benefit others. I actually pulled my beam out and dropped it
at my welder's shop just as I was leaving the country for a few weeks, and
having left the drawing at home he just chose to copy the beam from the
original. In my case the original beam was drastically compromised, but the
exterior shape was intact.
I will look for some links to Roger's job and pass them on. May have to
send him an email and disturb him if I can't find them. He's been very busy
and therefore inactive on the Cal List. I have attached his mechanical
drawing converted to a PDF. He modified the drawing to leave a larger
limber hole at the bottom, an improvement in drainage.
You've seen my web page, and I apologize that I've been too damned busy
sailing to update the page. My beam replacement has been finished for 2 1/2
years, and in just the last few months I have finally started finishing out
all of the interior trim. After spending many months without my boat during
the beam and bulkhead re-hab, I would go down to work on the boat and end up
going out sailing instead.
Like Alfred, I replaced my main bulkhead and scarfed a lower section onto
the forward bulkhead. For this reason, I chose to take the head out as well
as a portion of the settee and ice box. Leaving the main bulkhead and head
in place is very doable with some creative scarfing. I've always felt like
my ice-box was under-insulated and opened up enough of the counter to remove
it and re-build it substantially. I added a lot of R factor and a
double-trap thick insulated door.
I will start to go through some of my photos and will either update my web
page with them or can send some of them upon request.

Hi. I read your beam replacement page and have a few questions.
First I guess that I should mention that I am a new owner of an older (1974)
Cal 29. I guess that it is a Cal 2-29 from what I have been told, but I
bought it as a Cal 29. I did not know anything about the Cal beam when I
bought the boat so I did not even look for it or problems that it may have.
Needless to say, there is not much left of the beam by looking at the piles
of flaked rust where the tabs used to be.
Well, I guess that I will replace it. I see not what I am getting into, so I
may as well dig in.
I see that you pretty much gutted the cabin in your boat to replace the beam
and bulkhead. The bulkhead in my boat is in great shape and does not need to
be replaced.
My question is regarding replacing just the beam, where is the best place to
cut the pan to access the beam. The boat is out of the water on the hard and
derigged so there is no mast and no load on the cabin top.
I see that I will need to remove the port locker and the icebox. But I dont
see that I need to remove the head (but maybe I need to look closer) or the
sink (head).
Any more information that you can give me would be great.
Thanks,
Tim

Good luck Tim. I had studied Wilkie's pages to great extent
concerning the beam, knew about it before purchase and used a bore
scope to look at it, and luckily haven't had to replace it. I found
the tabs were still in reasonable shape and ospho'd and painted the
metal. The bulkhead was a different story, although I did that in the
water with the mast up--was able to leave the compression post in
place. If you need more pictures of the area:
