All - I've posted to the list a couple of times asking questions about Cal 39's and yesterday I sealed the deal on the 1980 Cal 39 listed below. She's going to need a lot of TLC on a lot of minor items but luckily the deck and hull were very dry and she's got a lot of major upgrades, new 56hp Yanmar, new boom, new paint, new radar, new chartplotter, new traveller, new electric panels, new main all in the last 3-5 years, that make doing all the minor stuff a non issue. My goal is to get her in shape for the '09 Annapolis to Newport race and the Annapolis to Bermuda race in 2010. The PO raced her but never had a hydraulic backstay adjuster on her. We use ours all the time on our CS 30 and I was wondering if maybe this mast isn't "bendy" enough to warrant the expense. Anyone have any ideas on the flexibility of the mast and if a hydraulic backstay adjuster is worthwhile? Hi, Paul. Where do you and the boat live? I believe the backstay on a tree trunk mast really sets the forestay sag to windward rather than bending the mast. Could be wrong on that for a boat the size of a 39, but I don't try to get any mast bend in my CAL 40 (hydraulic) or CAL 25 (obviously manual). Forestay sag is a good thing for sail shaping. The CALs are really jib sailers for the big genoas, and bendy masts are main sailers. Based on no particular science, only my experience, I say that you set the jib on a CAL the way you want it, and then trim the main to match. On something like a frac rig J, you set the main and bend the mast the way you like it, and then trim the jib to match that. Best of Luck with your Cal 39. I followed a similar path and purchased a 1980 Cal 39 and prepared for the Marion-Bermuda Race. She is fast and fun to sail and comfortable, if a bit wet, offshore. Enjoy her. I went to the web site and it listed a MKII - I am 99% sure this is a an MKIII - the MKII has only one head on the port side and the sink is in the middle covering the engine. I have the tall rig and the 5'6" draft version. Galley on the port and nav station on starboard. Only one cabin.
