I bought the GPSMap 76Cx just before moving the boat from Moss Landing in Monterey Bay up to San Leandro on the San Francisco Bay. I absolutely love this GPS. I use it just as much in the car as I do the boat and we hike with it also. I plan boat trips, car trips, and/or hikes on the home computer, download the appropriate charts and/or maps to the unit and set off. It transitions from shore to land and back to shore with only 3 minor menu changes and has never given me a bad turn on land or sea. The only thing I wish is that I had sprung for the extra $40 to get the next step up with the built-in compass and altimeter for use while I'm hiking in the Sierras. It handles topos as well as charts and maps and the live compass would keep you from having to walk ten steps or so to get a bearing. And since all of the maps are stored on the PC, I only have to fill the unit memory with those that I need for any one trip. And the color display is worth every penny over the black and white especially when the seas hit 15 feet going over the outer bar at 2am with a three knot outgoing current -- it only took one quick glance to see how much we were swinging as we fought each swell. I have dropped it and it does float and it didn't squawk one iota about being mounted on the cockpit table during the 12 hours of rain that we had offshore on the way up the California coast. The 12 volt supply line from the power port (used to be called a cigarette lighter) locks into the back when using the boat mount that I bought with it keeping you from having to permanently mount a 12 volt supply to the helm. And the mount has two thumb wheels allowing you to swivel and angle the unit to match any position you take at the helm in the cockpit. My opinion -- I love mine. But, I will admit, I have little experience with other than dedicated automobile units which would be absolutely worthless on the boat. It's floating ability sure is attractive! The one I chucked in the drink was a Magellan eXplorist 200: really funny looking, but it did the job really well, I thought. I have a Garmin 76CsX also. Never had one before. I have more fun with it on the highway between Phoenix and San Diego than I do on the water. It got us safely from Ocean Side to San Diego on our first ever sail on the ocean following our successful Cal 28 eBay purchase. Even after the sun went down and caught us out on the ocean in the dark (another first) with no radar reflector. The color screen is very bright, even in daylight sitting in the cockpit. Unfortunately, we bought it at the little shop next to the Harbor Police Office in Ocean Side and paid top dollar at the time. Ebay is great for this kind of thing, too. Hey, Garmin makes the Nuvii, is that a little more "nautical" for you? I wonder if they are working on the software? Wouldn't it be a little more appropriate for a nice female voice to say "approaching marker red 32" than the annoying "beep, beep, beeeeeeep" and having to change screen view to a message screen? They have the technology, the market is much lower than the bazillion automobiles on the road. Maybe out for the next boat show. I bet they would out sell the non charting GPS models!
