The boat is currently on the hard on its trailer getting its winter
re-rewiring / bottom paint / interior desalting (gotta love those
storms). I am still working as a web designer and general computer fix
it guy for southern California.
I have not updated my web site in a long time, but I am planning on
getting back to it in a month or so. It will be a general boating /
sailing / computer site.
How are you and Mariposa doing? I have been off list for a while, are
there any important happenings / goings on I have missed?

Mat,
Great to hear from you!
You are one of the true Cal Stalwarts, having sailed your Cal 20 up the coast from So.Cal to San Francisco single handed (and points further north??).
Some of us met Mat for the first time when he single-handed his little boat up from -was it Dana Point- in one of the nastiest CCCCCC's ever, the same one in which had Eric and I sailing down wind from Marina del Rey it winds in +/- 26 knot range, once pegging our GPS at 14+knots. Mat sailed up wind in this same nasty tempest for a day and a half, single handed, to be the first ever Cal 20 at a CCCCC event at Howlands.

Matthew,
Things are going OK. It's been a couple of years since I updated my web
page also: it does not reflect the fact that my beam and bulkhead renewal
project has been done for a long time.
I need to finish up some cosmetic stuff here and there -- some of it damage
from moving tools in and out of the boat, and some of it damage from racing
her hard for several years.
If you're up this way, drop in and see us.
Wilkie

How much wiring does you boat have to be re-done? Mine is limited to
the port, starboard, and stern running light.

My brother sent me a box of old /Practical Sailor/ issues from the
1990s. I went through and cut out all the boat reviews and some musings
on the art of sailing by Dan Spurr, Dale Nouse, and Nick Nicholson.
Reading them reminded me of what's been missing in PS lately. They've
gone to gloss and color but they've lost a lot of heart.
In any event, one review was of the Cal 20. They noted that "The Cal
20's seaworthiness is legendary--at least among Cal owners." And they
concluded, "the 20 offers the responsiveness of a dinghy--/they're fun
to sail/--with the secure feeling and stability of a much bigger boat."
I added the emphasis there--they're fun to sail!! Right on!
And on the subject of much bigger boats, they also reviewed the Cal 46,
and had very nice things to say about the design & execution.

They are great cruising boats but can't get out of their own way in light air. Of course,
that's what diesels are for. The Cal 43 and 48 are also great cruising boats and sail well.
They won races in the 60s and are still fleet footed in any breeze. Both designs have done
circumnavigations with no mishaps. The Cal 40 is a great weekend cruiser and I would be
comfortable going to Mexico (and still hope to) and even to the South Pacific. I think it
would be a stretch to take it around the world because of storage capacity.

That's exactly what /PS/ said in the review--they're designed for
cruising and they're quasi-motorsailors, so the theory is that you'll
fire up the engine when the breeze drops. The review said that for
their intended purpose, they're extremely well thought out.

Again, the review pointed out that the 46 has a relatively small
interior because so much space was given over to storage--exactly what
is needed in a cruising vessel (unlike those apartment-like interiors
shown in the ads in the glossy sail mags now).

Reminds me of once when I showed a couple of friends the
interior of a beutiful Mason 43. The couldn't beleive how "small
and cramped" it was for a 43 foot boat.
Apart from storage, another consideration is: what will it
be like trying to move about or work below when the weather
is up? Big condo interiors aren't useful, they can even be
dangerous. Who wants to be thown acorss a 12 foot beam?
Or down 18 feet of salon?

The PS review of that one called its interior "exquisite." I guess it
depends on whether you plan to go sailing or hold parties aboard.

I used about 200' of 10-14 gauge duplex wiring on the whole boat. I
have plans to simplify it, but there are a lot of toys to run :-). I
love electricity.

Wow--what kind of toy needs 10-gauge? Have you got some sort of
heavy-duty transmitter up in the forepeak? Autopilot?
My boat has to make do with a portable flashlight and an old D-cell
powered RDF for its sound system. Lights are in place but unsupported
by an actual battery so far.
