New Berthing Cloth
Donald Dutton2008-01-15 18:49 UTC
My 21 year old (will be 22 in two weeks) fabric on the seats, seat-backs, and berths is just starting to look a little used....
Anyone have a good source of foam and cloth material to re-build and re-cover all interior cushions for our Cal33. We want to give it a birthday make-over and do it ourselves. Since many of you have undertaken complete interior make-overs I'm sure you must have found a good supplier for marine grade fabrics?!
Thanks,

Howdy, all. I can address the foam aspect. Do you want it real cushy?
I went 5" on one of my CAL 25s. Crew loves to sleep on the boat. Pick
your thickness. (Standard is 3 inches). I used an electric turkey
carver to cut the foam, beveled edges and all. You want to cut the foam
about 1" bigger than your dimensions. I made [paper patterns. I was
warned not to use a magic marker on the foam since it might show through
the cloth. Here was my source - go down to mattresses:
http://www.foamorder.com/cushions.html
I used the DuraFlex(tm) D34.
I used Sunbrella cloth for durability.
Cheers
Charlie

Another idea to consider is having the underside of the cushions done with some
sort material that has lots of holes. Sort of like the stuff that is used these
days for the backs of office chairs, or something like that.
Even if you use closed cell foam, this is still a good idea as a mildew inhibitor.
When you leave the boat, prop up or turn up against the ceiling all cushions.

something a bit more plush.

Beth and I bought 20 yds of what was claimed to be sunbrella from a
Mr. Gerald White (he advertises a lot of different colors available)
on eBay to redo her Cal-27. Needless to say it bleached out in the
Nevada sun within 6 months. The previous stuff on the boat that was
real sunbrella, although wind ravaged, lasted 10 years. Buyer beware!

Re: New Berthing Cloth SEARCH

We had a list discussion about Sunbrella last May and June. If you
want to review those about Sunbrella or any topic, just pull up the
home page, or open up a message, find the SEARCH BOX area for the
Cal page at the top of the message, and type in sunbrella. It should
pull up about 40 emails. Some of those are the current discussion,
and the older messages will give the great info that was supplied by
some of our fellow Cal owners. Two that jumped out are below:
Sunbrella alternative
Randy,
The fabric is SurLast and I have two addresses:
PO Box 1173
Torrington, CT 06790
425 Richard Rd., Suite A
Rockledge, FL 32955
800.831.4377
I also got quite a few hits when I used a search engine on Sunbrella
suppliers.
Gina, Stultitia, 1974 CAL 25 #1667
or if you want the big selection of sunbrella it is:
www.sunbrella.com
OR
you may want to look at Sailrite. The link is at:
http://www.sailrite.com/ They have the sunbrella fabric and all
supplies. Terry Spencer Capriccio Cal 2-29 Tacoma

You say Sunbrella lasts ten years? I have the "persian green" for my mainsail cover and it still looks terrific after ten years and counting. The only thing going is the threads are coming off the seams.
