John, I have one of those too!!! I enrolled in the upholstery classes at the local tech school. Great access to nice sewing machines, and information on “how to” and “where to buy”. The instructors were a little baffled by the “sail boat” concept and kept wanting to steer me to waterproof and sunproof fabrics. I ended up at a discount upholstery fabric and bought a almost full roll of commercial grade upholstery fabric for less than $8 a yard. This is a deep discount from the potential 18-30 you would pay retail. Color and pattern were limited, but saving hundreds of dollars just on the fabric was enough incentive for SWMBO to compromise her designs and desires. Check around at some local re-upholster shops. There may be local sources of materials other than paying full retail. Finding the right material at a fair price will make this project affordable. I may still have the paper templates for the cushion foam. I had to show the foam shop how the settee pieces fit together to form one queen size mattress. This saved me about a third of the cost since they were going to “square up” each cushion and charge me for the waste material too! I also redesigned the seat backs, putting in a mid back roll. This gives your lower back more support and much more comfortable than the original flat foam back. Good luck on your project, I hope you enjoy this as much as I did. I have learned a lot and been given some very good leads in working on this project. Responding to each email would flood the group, so please consider this a thank you to everyone. I think the ultra-suede solution is what we are looking at with a purchase of the foam either from the San Francisco or Florida firms that were listed. Later in the year, as the project is finished, I will send the group details of what we decided, how it went, project cost, and some pictures of the outcome in hopes it might help you all in return. Smooth sailing, Don Dutton, 1986 Cal33, "Quantum Evolution" I used sunbrella on my Catalina 30 and didn' really like it. If I re-do my cushions, I'm going with utra swade. It's used on a lot of high end boats. So much of this project is in the labor so why not go with the best fabric. Dave 80 Cal 35 Runnin Late Coyote Pt, SF Bay Error! Filename not specified. David, Don't know what I would do without her. She's the one that wanted to take a Sailing class and started this habit!
