Looking for a Boom
clausont2008-01-16 02:33
I am looking for a replacement boom for my Cal 2-29. The original was
bent so I am looking to replace it. If you happen to have or know of a
boom for sale I would surely appreciate it.
My existing boom is 12' 6" long. I would really like to replace it
with a little heavier boom.
Thanks,
Tim

Tim:
If you are on the west coast, check with Ballenger Spars in
Watsonville or Forespar in Southern Ca.
If you are on the east coast, check with Rigrite or Dwyer spars in CT.
Cheers,

Tim,
I bought a new boom from a company called Le Fiel. They were in one of
those urban parts of Los Angeles -- maybe Santa Fe? They make gigantic
aluminum castings for aerospace and their side business are spars. My
rigger recommended them. They were very easy to work with.
I can't find them on the web, but if you will give me some time I can locate
them in my paperwork. It is a really nice heavy duty spar and it wasn't
horribly expensive.
I wouldn't buy a used spar if you can avoid it. Somebody has taken it out
of service for a reason.
Wilkie

Thanks Wilkie and John - I will check into this. I can get the
original spar extrusion and sleeve to reinforce it from Seals Spars
for (really) not too bad of a price out of Alameda. I was hoping to
find one to get going a little cheaper for now. I am looking at a
couple right now, but you have a good point that they were taken out
of service for a reason.

ho, Tim.....
fiver here. many apologies for the delay; been a bit sick of
late.
i see that you are in god's Country! (oregon)..... not far
from where i am here in the *Tower's of the Morning* (Seattle). i too
have need of a bigger-stronger boom. the only difference is that i
may have one for BB-54 in that i have a spare cal-25 mast...... :)(:
and just as the Great Cal-40 utilizes a cal-28 mast-section as a
boom. i may up-grade my Cal-28 to a cal-25 mast-section for a boom.
of course, if i do decide to bisect said cal-25 mast; there will be
enough for two!
however, it will require a person to fabricate their own boom-
end-fittings........ not something i will have a problem with. but
others may depending on their shop-skill's (and tool's).
fiver,
Master of The "BB-54"
one of the famous Cal-28 flush-decks

Scott,
My boat as pictured on my web site has a stock goose neck fitting and boom.
I modified it so that the swiveling action was disabled in order to make my
ridged boom vang work properly.
My new LeFiell spar is not shown on the web site, but it is anchored to the
boom with a simple stainless steel bracket that I had fabricated by Garhauer
to match the boom fitting that came with it. Garhauer did a great job and
it was relatively inexpensive.
It is shaped to fit the profile of the mast and attaches with 8 large
rivets. It looks like the bracket that they build for their boom vangs and
functions the same. Attachments seem to come through these days so I have
attached a photo taken during installation. Not all of the rivets are in
yet and an oversized temporary bolt was installed.

Hi
Wilkie
Thanks on the insight I mean the picture of the new boom.
Is your boom old now a spare? I saw the mods that where done do it on your web site
and I thought this a very good reefing mod.
Here in SF we reef a lot all day the first reef with winds that reach 35knts at
SFO I'm at Coyote Pt just south of that. Had great surfs back during the summer.
Could I ask one more question about the Engine and hull speed
I still have the Farryman a30 and the prop is martec 15x10 the boat can make
about 5.5 knots with a clean bottom and engine can rev all way up no tach on this old
german beast I can get 6.0 at times but it seems to be less than 6.0 most of the
time using GPS so knowing when tide affects speed.
There could a clutch tranny slip because has been to mexico and back ( I think this
maybe a Issue but just a hunch) And 12hp is not much either .
Well what is your prop and engine and speed?
I would like to sail down for one of the Island trips sometime and then go where?
so I have watched whished to do one of those.
I race in local y.c. races you welcome to join us for great summer day on the bay
for fun crusie or race.
regards
Scott

Our old Farymann would easily push our 2-29 to hull speed at the
second throttle detent with a 12x12 prop. Kick the throttle up a bit
and it was wet feet....
That was after replacing the stock diaphram fuel pump with an
electric. If you're still using the stock fuel pump, I'd look to
that before the tranny.

John,
I have at best got 5.5 knots out of my A30, an additional knot would be great! So, converting to an electric fuel pump is the way to go you say. Can the old one be simply removed and replaced or is there some special parts required?

RE: [Cal_Boats] Looking for a Boom
Wilkie2008-01-18 17:02 UTC
Scot & all,
The old boom was set up nicely.... thanks. It was pretty corroded in a lot
of places and needed to be reinforced where the rigid vang attached to it.
I decided to replace it. Unfortunately, I stripped the hardware off of it
and left it in the driveway where it got ran over. Ooops. I still have the
Schaeffer exit box, tracks and sliding cheek blocks in my garage. I was
going to put that stuff on ebay, but If you wanted to try the single line
reefing thing, hit me off line.
I've only sailed in 30+ knots a handful of times, but always with huge seas
to deal with and often breaking waves coming over the quarter. Those are
the conditions we get from open ocean waves funneling SE through the Santa
Barbara Channel. Most of our sailing is pretty light air otherwise.
Mariposa loves to surf. I've never had the opportunity to sail San
Francisco. I visit there a lot and watch races from the Marina from time to
time. I have a son there, but he's not into sailing. So it would be pretty
cool to catch a ride one of the times that I visit him.
OK -- I have the BMW D12 engine. It is very similar to the Faryman in power
(and noise and vibration) output. I swing a 14X12 flex-o-fold prop and I
think the pitch is just a hair too much, but the 11 seemed too free-revving.
The engine will not quite make full RPM (by ear - no prop) but she really
scoots in normal conditions. My conclusion is that the 12 pitch is harder
on the engine, but faster in flat conditions, which is where I would most
likely motor. In rough conditions, the 11 would be better.
Historically, my boat speed had dropped significantly after towing a Newport
30 into the harbor a few years ago. The trannie was slipping and eventually
over-heated and ate it's own dip stick. Fairly common on those nasty Hurth
trannies. Replacing the trannie put me back to my normal 5.5 knot boat
speed (12X10 fixed prop.) The bigger Flex-O-Fold has made a huge
difference.
Regards,
Wilkie

The experts can address this but I recall that marine engines with
electric fuel pumps require special protection (auto shut off) so they
don't fill your bilge with fuel if there's a failure downstream from
it. I guess it's a lot more important with gas engines than with
diesel but I sure wouldn't like a bilge full of diesel.

go you say. Can the old one be simply removed and replaced or is
there some special parts required?

Hi Mark,
It's been a while....
The stock fuel pump lines have a sort of sleeved end that attach to
the stock pump with banjo bolts. I had a fitting made that would
connect the two line ends together so that I didn't have to mess with
the fuel lines and could always roll back easy if I ever decided to.
I'm sure that I kept that part when I pulled the Farymann out for
just an instance like this. Now, I just have to remember where I put
it.... I'll see if I can find it this weekend and if I do, you can
have it.
I used a UL Approved electric pump, which is kind of strange because
I don't recall anything 12v needing UL approval. Anyway, the UL pump
was the one that the Captain's Locker guys recommened and I thought a
little pricey, but it worked well. I know where that is on my boat,
and if you want that too, toss me a few bucks for it. :)
I had your number around here once upon a time, but it's been a
while, so.... Feel free to give me a ring at 310-488-6769
Best,
John
