Mike, Sounds you are totally refitting the boat. Ask Defender for their outfitting department and if your order is large enough you get an additional discount. Thanks for the replies guys. Your info was very helpful. By the way, I have been subscribed to this Cal group for over a year now and I almost feel like I know a lot of you. Hi Mike, In our travels from SoCal, 2 years in Mexico and Central America, plus 2 1/2 years roaming the Caribbean we found each country different in their import duty charges. Mostly PITA's. However, I sold a steering system to one of your fellow Canadians and the duty was about the same as the cost of the used system. In some countries, you could have incoming parts marked,"Yacht ______. in transit" and avoid or reduce duties. The Bahamas are about the most expensive as their main source of taxes is import duty, Budweiser is $48 a case, so we take our own beer there. I do not know about the Caymans. When we were enjoying our two years in Mexico, we had our old van there, so made regular trips back to Long Beach and brought gear back with no problemos, that $20 cash could not cure ;-). In Trinidad, a local had set up a West Marine/Port Supply account and had a conex shipped in whenever he had sold enough, good prices. While we were there we were hired to deliver two boats back to the USA, so on our way back we brought essentials, like an air conditioner, back in our luggage. I am not suggesting you not obey the local laws. Depending on your long term plans, it may be less expensive to take the necessary safety items with you in your luggage, then sail up to the Florida Keys and do your shopping, at West Marine. Maybe you can find another cruiser heading down the islands aand get him to bring a few items for you. Last winter one of our cruiser friends drug anchor by Cayman Brac and suffered a lot of damage. They got a local to tow them to Grand Cayman to haul out and repair. They were pleased with the local service and prices. They are somewhere down there now and we have lost contact, but if you see a Valiant 40, named "WILLOW", Nancy is the owner, a good friend of ours. Hi Janet, Long time no talk.... Unfortunately, Nancy and Judith broke up, nancy kept the Valiant, Judith the house. They are still good friends of ours. I don't think Nancy has very much income, so things have changed. She met a nice lady from newport Beach, CA and has been hanging out there, but still using Willow. We have not heard from her in several months. Miss her. Bravura is getting a total paint job, same colors and scheme, just fresh. It has been well timed as I have been in the hospital for over a month, Nov., Dec. Now back home but cannot walk as I lost my inner ear balance function due to over prescription of antibiotocs. I am getting better, but cannot drive a car, or walk without asistance. Don't know about going to sea again???? My granddaughters will be racing Bravura this summer in the two all female races.
