Welcome to the Cal List!
Alfred Poor2008-01-29 01:29 UTC
I've been asked to fill some might large sea boots, but here goes. I have
created the following welcome message that I will try to remember to post
from time to time (feel free to nudge me if you feel the time has come). It
is derived from some of Brian Cleverly's posts; feel free to let me know
(on-list or off-list) if you have anything else that you think I should add.
======
Welcome to the Cal List! As with any community, we have a few (very few)
guidelines about participation here, designed to help keep this one of the
best forums available on the Web. From time to time, we post these gentle
reminders that we ask you to keep in mind.
1. We often have multiple replies to the original posting, and then we have
replies to the replies. We have found that it makes it easier to track if
you put the name of the person you are replying to in the Subject of your
message.
For example, if Joe sends a message with a subject of "help me I'm sinking",
when you reply you add (Joe) to the end of the subject line.
Re: help me I'm sinking (Joe)
2. On occasion, the thread of a discussion can depart from its initial
course. When this happens, please change the Subject heading so the rest of
us know.
For example, Bill sends a message re mast step leaks, and this leads to you
to initiate a discussion on caulking. Please change the Subject line with
reference to the original, something like:
Deck Caulking, was [Re: Mast Step] (Bill)
3. Some of our members read these messages as a daily digest, which strings
all the messages from the past 24 hours into one long message. I know that
it's easiest to just hit Reply, add your message to the top, and hit Send,
but this often results in pages and pages of old messages being included in
your message (not to mention all the confidentiality disclaimers that get
appended when some folks reply from their office).
If you would take a moment to clip all the extraneous tail of your reply,
leaving enough to provide the context for your response, it will make it
much easier and enjoyable for the digest users to read the messages.
4. Please sign your messages so we know who you are, especially if your
email address doesn't indicate your name. It feels a little silly to discuss
single-handed safety issues and have to start with "I agree with
brassmonkey66 about safety harnesses."
Just your first name will do if you want to be sociable but retain your
privacy. You'll note that many participants include a signature block with
their Cal model, year, hull number, and name. This is helpful in finding
others with boats similar to yours.
If you take the time to follow these suggestions, the rest will likely take
care of itself. Thanks for your time and enjoy this, the best boat email
list on the Web! (.with a tip of the Tilley to Cal guru, Brian Cleverly)

So, whatever happened to Brian? Last thing I remember he was trying to rehab (like singer Amy Winehouse on youtube song "Rehab"?) an older classic plastic design ocean cruiser-the name of the boat escapes me at this moment-and cut away so much rotten laminations that he gave up and sent the boat to the land fill. This was after he had successfully restored a Mark II Cal 25, from which he removed the gelcoat using paint remover that dissolved epoxy- the same stuff I used to remove the old varnish on my Cal 24 woodwork.
I remember he was marketing an alternative to the classic roller furling, which enabled you to remove the sail from the forestay easily. Then..Pooof! he vanished.
I really miss his authoritative commentary.

While we're at it, is it too early to start thinking about a Spring Time CCCCC in Catalina?
Who's planning to do the Ensenada Race? The Pacific Cup?
There's a San Fernando Yacht Club Race here in Marina del Rey this Saturday. Pretty low key, we meet at the Burton Chase Park Guest Dock adjacent to the fish pen between 9-9:30 AM to pick up race instructions, fill out forms and pay modest entry fee. Then it's off to the races!

My only suggestion, based on experience on some other lists, is that you
include a standard civility warning. We don't have any problem with
that now, perhaps because sailors are tolerant and laid-back. But
stating a preference for civilized interchanges is good.

Hi all you SoCal-Cal sailers,
This seems like a good time to mention that my GF and I will be visiting your area for a weekend about every month starting this spring.
We would love to "help" you and be crew for any event or day sail while there. We realize sailing the coast is vastly different than Lake Mead here in Las Vegas. In this regard we are looking to trade our "help" in aquiring some of your experience.
Oh yeah, we are fun too!

Brian gave me a huge amount of assistance on the refinishing of my Cal 39
last year. At the time he was working on a complete refit of an older boat
and unless the pictures he sent me (to illustrate some techniques he was
using) were all oa hoax, the project was going quite well. He said he
planned to finish up the refit and then depart on an extended cruise. The
last email communication I had with him was in May of last year so I presume
that he did finish up and headed out.
He was incredibly helpful to me - I could not have managed the project I
don't think without his input.

The preferred style they want us to use when adding to or changing subject is, or would be:
] day sail, was: CCCCC..etc. That's so folks in the future can track down info from previous conversations, amplifying the utility of this discussion room.
Don't worry it's easy for even old timers to forget the format, forget the person's message referred to (Kevin) or (name of person's message you'd like to address) and yes, I haven't yet gotten the hang of, or tried the clip out the phrase and delete the rest, I'm to anxious to reply to stop and thing about how the next person will attempt to make sense of my commentary.
But...to answer your question...I've got a smallish boat but i could probably squeeze four crew aboard. But, if I know when you folks are coming i probably can get you on a boat on a day sail or a race. And, good to hear from
you!
