Out Patient is Island ready

Randy Alcorn2008-01-30 04:11 UTC
It seems like forever, but I finally got the strut replaced on Out Patient. Martec made the new one so much more beaffier. The old strut was swiss cheese and very thin. I also replaced the prop. I ended up with more pitch. It seems like the motor is just above idel and I am doing almost 5 kts. Maybe it is the new bottom paint. Thursday evening I will do a speed run and see how things changed. It has been months since I have had my boat out. Anyone heading out and looking for whales this weekend? Wilkie, when is the next Island trip? Randy CAL 2-29 Out Patient Channel Islands CA --------------------------------- Looking for last minute shopping deals? Find them fast with Yahoo! Search.

Wilkie has Island Fever. etc. etc. I've got gigs the next two weekends, but then I'm open until first weekend in March. Let's talk off-list... Randy, I have still have the strut to replace. How much did the strut cost thru Martec and did you have to give them anything to work from? Re: [Cal_Boats] Out Patient ([Prop Strut] Mark)

Mark, The Martec strut was 500 and included the cutlass bearing. My local shop would not touch it for 800 and then added the bearing on top of it. Not mention how long he said I was going to be in the yard. I pulled the strut while the boat was in the water to keep from paying the laydays at the yard. Once I sent the strut to Martec they got it back to me in a week. I made sure they met my time frame. Gary is a good person to work with. They kept my strut and bond-oed it up to make it the current configuration. Really beefy and fits the old alignment. I feel lucky that so far my strut is an exact replacement. However, I am still trying to get the coupler bolts out so I can make sure I have an exact replacement. Meaning; I can still rotate the shaft by hand. You should line up the engine afterwards so thier is no stress on the drive train. When the boat is on the hard you can not line up the drive train. You have to wait for the boat to be in the water. My recommendation is to undo the coupler now and then get the new strut and realign things when you put the boat back in the water. My prop. The jury is still out. Did I need one or did I really need one. It was 34 years old and it looked really good to me. But Martec told me it was shot. I got a new one and now have a old prop as a spare to get me home in an emergency. They gave me a new pitch and it really brings the engine RPM's down. The new one is different in shape. We are talking folding props. The yard told me I needed a new prop shaft as well. I was warned by someone who had thier boat in the yard for three weeksd . He said they tell everyone that and so, I sanded mine down and I had no more discolorations. I am pulling my boat in November to paint the top sides and will check it then. Oh yeah, pulling the strut in the water was interesting. The screws as Wilkie describes are epoxied in. Once you remove the lock nuts, You have to unscrew them from the hull. I hope that helps in the water or out. I will help you if you need any more info. I would like to thank Dave Paulson and David Wilkie Owens. Dave Paulson loaned me a gear puller that was so big it made pulling the prop easy. Me and a diver spent hours in the water with the wrong gear and Dave stopped by with the right tool. it popped the prop so easy we thought we broke something else. By the time I pulled the boat, sanded the bottom, drilled and repaired the blisters, repainted the bottom, installed the new strut and prop I used 4 days in the yard. That was 45 a day plus hazmat fees. Good luck if you do it yourself. Randy CAL 2-29 Out Patient Channel Islands Ca Randy, I have still have the strut to replace.
