Chris, Welcome to the list. I think the CAL 33 is one of the musdt have boats Bill Lapworth built. I know thier are other owners on the list, I am just filling in what I believe. The CAL 33 rates a 156 in PHRF and it sails to it. It is very well built and you can bring it up date and have boat for a very long time. I watch the list and yachtworld and it is normally a very good deal for what you get. I currently have the 2-29 but watch for the CAL 33's that are for sale. For some reason I am not getting on the other line but go to CAL Yachts and they have the specs for CAL boats. Where are you and what boat do you have you sights on? Good luck Randy CAL 2-29 Out Patient Channel Islands Chris H <ch… [at] magma.ca> wrote: Greets: Anyone have specs or any data on the 70's CAL 33. But Im not that interested in racing rather cruising so its one of three that I have currently shortlisted and looking into. Looking for a good rough weather/water platform and one that I can afford..:) Dont mind doing the work as I really enjoy that aspect. > I watch the list and yachtworld and it is normally a very good deal for > what you get. You have a URL thats up. calyachts.org seems down. Running a whois, the domain is valid till next year, just the site hosted on godaddy seems down. Or am I looking at the wrong site, URL? > Where are you and what boat do you have you sights on? Im in Ottawa Canada, and the boat is close to home, hence the interest. Most CAL's I find are east coast boats which means a long drive to inspects and then transport home needs to be considered which increases the investment. Will take a detailed look at it as soon as the weather clears a bit. Currently we are getting hit with one storm after another. But next week seems to look good for now. Many thanks for the info. -- /ch

I agree regarding the quality and characteristics of the Cal-33. I had the pleasure of racing the boat for a year with Dick Deaver on his hull #1 (Counterpoint), including a race to La Paz, Mexico from Long Beach. Jack Jensen was part of the crew for that race. Deaver's prior boat was hull #1 of the Cal-29 fleet. Fin, you describe these Hulls No. 1 and No. 2 from days of yore as if you were a grizzled old veteran. Since I've met you, I know that you are neither particularly old nor particularly grizzled. I've tried to find info on the 33 but its rare. calyacht.org is down and puntagorda offers no data. Im not very knowledgeable about this vessel and was wondering if you could elaborate a little more on the characteristics of the design. As said, for me personally racing is not the priority rather cruising and am wondering how the design handles in that regard. Furthermore, if anyone has a source for detailed standard specs on this model I would really be greatfull. -- /ch

Charlie ... thanks. Just by good fortune, it seems that I was at the epicenter of Cal-boat development. Also fortunate that Jensen / Lapworth turned to two of my good friends to "test" the new designs: George Griffith with the 1st Cal-40 and first Cal-39, and Deaver with the 29 and 33.
