suggestion for combo depth and GPS plotter

Bob Connell2008-02-07 21:06 UTC
I should have asked here to begin with.... I am spending hours on the web going through various manufacturers and product combinations trying to find a combination depth sounder and GPS for my 1979 Cal 31.....that won't force me to drill a new thru-hull for the transducer. The cap on the plug for the original transducer is labeled 1 1/4 but when it is measured with calipers at the o-ring it is 1 and barely a sixteenth. It looks like Garmin products require a "flush mount" thru-hull that requires a 2" hole. Humminbird has a inside hull but I could not find the specs at their website. I want to spend no more than $800 (mfg list but less if I can find it on ebay). PS....my current depth finder (big bulbous chrome gauge on the binnacle) acts intermittent when I am underway and flashes the dreaded 18 at the worst times..... To drill or not to drill? Thanks for the help. Bob Connell Jollygood Cal 31 #59 Olympia, WA --------------------------------- Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Mobile. Try it now.

I'd recommend drilling the hole larger and purchasing a Garmin 3205 for $699.00. Low batt drain, amazing ability and "they don't make 'em like they used to." Email me off list if you're interested. I found them at the boat show and they still have a few left. Ok, here's the deal..... being a raytheon tech from old; of course i have a preference for professionally inspired marine electronics. that being said, i wouldn't jump at anything without seriously looking at and pricing the "ST-70 multifunction" system from Raymarine Electronics. you will find the two needed URL's below for the "multifunction color display" that MSRP's for $830. so i am very sure anyone can get it for way below that. the display only start's with depth & GPS. in point of fact, to use it for only those simple function's is like buying a 4x4 dually 1- ton crew-cab and using it once a week to go to the food store. folks, this thing when given the right input; will get you from Seattle to Zimbabwe, and then back again! but you don't need to get all the bells and stuff right out of the gate. the second *URL* down at the bottom is for the "depth transducer pod" (MSRP $310). it uses a 200-kHz transducer. raymarine recommends any ST-30, 40, 50, 80, or 290 series ducer be used with it. however, those are your basic 300, 500 and 600 watt plastic ducer's. if you want a really kool job, raymarine has a 600 watt 200 kHz transducer that not only glue's to the inside of your hull. but can handle various angle's, and is it's own little oil-filled tank with removable lid that is the transducer. way better than those old glue to the hull types. the MSRP for these is just under $200 as i remember. oh, one other point. if you are only using one pod with the display. you should not need the back- bone kit i think..... so with finding this stuff at way below MSRP; and being able to buy a add-on's at your leisure. and being able too chain the display's together for multiple stations...... well, i am sure that even a bunch of old sailor like you get the point......! fiver (happy Governor Teats Race) http://www.raymarine.com/ProductDetail.aspx? Well, damn! those URL's didn't work. so just *Goggle "Raymarine.com" then just look for *interment's* on that page, and then *ST-70*. and then the ST-70 display and depth pod..... PS. guess the other was my personal raymarine account page.... ***************************** --- In Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com, "slickbutfoxbuger" <fiverhrairoo@...> wrote: > > Ok, here's the deal..... > > being a raytheon tech from old; of course i have a preference > for professionally inspired marine electronics. that being said, i > wouldn't jump at anything without seriously looking at and pricing > the "ST-70 multifunction" system from Raymarine Electronics. you will > find the two needed URL's below for the "multifunction color display" > that MSRP's for $830. so i am very sure anyone can get it for way > below that. > > the display only start's with depth & GPS. in point of fact, to > use it for only those simple function's is like buying a 4x4 dually 1- > ton crew-cab and using it once a week to go to the food store. > > folks, this thing when given the right input; will get you from > Seattle to Zimbabwe, and then back again! but you don't need to get > all the bells and stuff right out of the gate. the second *URL* down > at the bottom is for the "depth transducer pod" (MSRP $310). it uses > a 200-kHz transducer. raymarine recommends any ST-30, 40, 50, 80, or > 290 series ducer be used with it. however, those are your basic 300, > 500 and 600 watt plastic ducer's. if you want a really kool job, > raymarine has a 600 watt 200 kHz transducer that not only glue's to > the inside of your hull. but can handle various angle's, and is it's > own little oil-filled tank with removable lid that is the transducer. > way better than those old glue to the hull types. the MSRP for these > is just under $200 as i remember. oh, one other point. if you are > only using one pod with the display. you should not need the back- > bone kit i think..... > > so with finding this stuff at way below MSRP; and being able to > buy a add-on's at your leisure. and being able too chain the > display's together for multiple stations...... well, i am sure that > even a bunch of old sailor like you get the point......! > > fiver > (happy Governor Teats Race) > > > http://www.raymarine.com/ProductDetail.aspx? > SITE=1&SECTION=2&PAGE=1792&PRODUCT=4142 > > > http://www.raymarine.com/ProductDetail.aspx?product=4143 > > > ****************************** > --- In Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com, Bob Connell <jollygoodolywa@> > wrote: > > > > I should have asked here to begin with.... > > I am spending hours on the web going through various manufacturers > and product combinations trying to find a combination depth sounder > and GPS for my 1979 Cal 31.....that won't force me to drill a new > thru-hull for the transducer.
