What do you engine gurus see?
supposedly engine serviced last fall, new hoses, new sending units, heat exchanger replaced, injectors serviced, new 105 amp alternator.

Hi Reggie,
Your photo did not attach.
1969 Westerbeke is probably a Perkins 4-107 or 4-108,
both good engines in my opinion. Same as Mike and
Beth's Cal 40 which will be coming to my dock Monday.
I sold five Perkins 4-99, 4-107 or 4-108 the last two
years. Some after rebuilding. Those models did not
meet the EPA diesels emissions a few years back, so
Perkins upgraded and changed the model numbers.
Parts are readily available from several sources. If
it has been maintained PROPERLY, this engine should
give you 10,000 hours before a major OH. I suggest you
get an oil analysis. Kits are available at NAPA auto
parts.
Before leaving Lauderdale, I suggest you hire a
"reliable" mechanic to check hoses, belts, wiring, and
if it is hard starting or smokes, have the injectors
cleaned and calibrated. Regardess of whatthe PO says,
run the engine under load, examine carefully for oil,
water or exhaust leaks and look at the exhaust. Then
change the oil and filter, I like Chevron Delo 400, 40
wt for warm waters. Check oil in engine and gear
daily. Don't be too concerned if it burns a little
oil. The reduction gear may be a Paragon or Borg
Warner, change that oil also, probably ATF. Check for
leaks around the output shaft seal, a little is okay.
That engine and gear is almost 40 years old, if
original, so small leaks are likely.
I would be very concerned about the diesel fuel. If
you have time, get someone to pump your tank out and
refilter it. Find out what fuel filters you have and
get several spares. Hot, humid FL WX lets water build
up in tank, so you need to clean it and be prepared to
change fuel filters underway.
If you come up to Pensacola,I can help with your fuel
syustem, plus I have a few NOS Perkins parts.

I would strongly second this. We cleaned the diesel fuel in my boat
and got unbelievable amounts of crud. It had been on a mooring in
Newport Beach and probably had not been used for a couple of years.
