Weather out Northwest
'Twernt all bad yesterday on Puget Sound. Mount Rainier was out, with a
big snow plume blowing off the summit, and the snow covered Cascades
and Olympics were in view on their respective sides of the Sound. Fiver
and I took Nemesis out in 60 degree sunshine and sailed her up into
Quartermaster Harbor to look around, and to watch a PHRF race deal with
the quirky winds caused by the twisted shape of the harbor. It sits
more or less north-south between Maury and Vashon Islands with a big
dogleg in the middle. While the wind never exceeded 10 knots, it did
blow from every point on the compass, sometimes at the same time. We
saw a few PHRF boats, after a mile or longer spinnaker run, spend the
next 15 minutes fighting a foul current an no wind in every direction
try to cover the last 100 yards to the finish mark. At that point I
think we were having more fun than the racers.
Today it's high overcast and light wind, but I think I'll take a chance
and head out for a while any way.
