We still conduct winter-season trainings in D.R. and other navigation skills. I always try to go because I never have a chance to use those skills for about half of the year and it's helpful to do the training exercises to revive the skills. In the half when there is a chance, it's so easy not to use them and to rely on the GPS instead. Why do a fix using ranges or TSD or bearings when you can just look at the icon on the GPS? But I try to maintain the skills because part of the fascination of sailing for me is the independence of it, the reliance upon your own resources for safe and enjoyable passage. Being able to figure out where you are (without being told where you are) is a part of the independence. Chris Campbell
