Cal 25 Sail Dimensions
Craig Blackstock2008-02-29 17:29
I am having new sails made for my Cal 25 and my sailmaker has asked
for Cal 25 genoa dimensions. I found the Cal 25 owner's manual on the
internet but the sail dimensions are not legible. Does anyone have
dimensions for the sails? I will be using the original jib track,
which means the jib clew may need to be higher than on other boats. I
have an old main and working jib which he could measure, but I would
like the dimensions for the main, working jib and, especially, the
genoa shown in the manual which I believe is a 135. Any help is
appreciated.

Craig, you have one of the last flat deck CAL 25s made, and one of the
few made in 1977. Where are you located? I did a rehab on hull 1845
last year.
We have standard designs for CAL 25 No. 1s (class rule 150s, unless you
want a PHRF 155) from several sailmakers that we use in our racing.
These sails track to the original track area on the coaming - maybe 6
inches farther forward in some cases. See attached photo taken a few
weeks ago. The only measurement we use for legality for a 150 No.1 is
1.5 times the length of the J (which is 10.0 feet). The 15 feet is the
shortest distance from the clew to the luff. I can try to get the
actual leech length from some sailmaking friends if you like, or maybe
measure one this weekend. Hope this helps a little.
Cheers

Charlie,
Thanks for the response. I am in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and the boat is on
Keystone Lake, about twenty-five miles west of Tulsa. I believe the
boat was originally at Annapolis and was moved about six or seven
years ago to New Bern, NC. I bought it two years ago and moved it
here. The boat has some problems, but nothing that can't be fixed
relatively simply with a little imagination. I don't know why, but
your message on my computer shows that your images were not saved,
whatever that means. The new jib will be on a furler and I don't
think I want a 150, but I would appreciate your checking to see if you
can find a leech length. I expect that would help my sailmaker, who
is here in Tulsa, to size a 130 or a 135.
As an aside, I always enjoy your posts.
