This is one of life's little mysteries. If you want water to passthrough a hole or a pipe, it will plug up from the slightestprovocation. If you want to plug it up, it will leak relentlessly.
My other boat, the Cal 20, has port lights (windows) with aluminumframes and laminated safety glass set in vinyl gaskets. When I got theboat, they were leaking, so I removed the frames and rebedded them inpolysulfide rubber sealant (3M 101). All was fine until this lastsummer, when one was leaking again. After a particularly wet thrash towindward one day, I noticed that the frames were still sealed to thehull but the leak was around the vinyl gasket holding the glazing. Itshouldn't leak, it almost can't leak, but it does leak.
Rather than take the whole thing apart, I bought a tube of the Permatexsilicone sealer, the flowable stuff they sell to wick into windshieldgaskets by capillary action. Somebody mentioned it on one of theseboat lists the other day. I'll try it when we see some spring hereand the winter cover comes off.
Meanwhile, I'm left to ponder why it is that the things that shouldleak won't and the things that shouldn't leak do.
