Real pretty site is seeing a line of 10 Atlantic 30's being towed down
the sound. Not nearly as pretty as those same 10, plus another 12
going downwind under spinnaker!

There's a big tradition of towing sailing vessels in the Great Lakes.
In the early days of freight steamers, before they were building them in
steel, they could make steam engines that were more powerful than they
could make hulls to use them. So the steamers would tow schooner
barges, or consort schooners, for additional capacity. They were built
with masts and rigging and sometimes in big storms they'd be cast adrift
to fend for themselves. Eventually the hull building technology caught
up and the big steel steamers could carry all they needed. One of the
ship builders in Bay City, MI was building wood hulls, schooners and
steamers, into the 20th century. They were cheap to build and if he
couldn't sell 'em. he ran 'em in his own fleet.
