yes folks, i know how it works. i have been around the world
before. this is an *Old-Boys Club*
This is one of the most ridiculous claims to make about David "Wilkie" Owen - one year ago I was the "newbie" here, new boat-owner and still relatively new to sailing, and the Santa Barbara Cal-Owners group has welcomed me with "open arms" and David on the fore-front and yes, I am a female... I am sure his favoring of the "good old boys network" also has everything to do with the fact that 3 of his WetWednesday race crew are female - I have raced with him for a year now - he took me on board with almost no race experience - and I learned an aweful lot...
Maybe his reaction to your posts has more to do with your attitude than anything else...

yes folks, i know how it works. i have been around the world
before. this is an *Old-Boys Club*. and i have no doubt that many of
you have known each other long before the apparent start date of this
current group on or about the end of Oct 2005. you all got the hand-
shake or *cheers* down pat, don't you. and you have all been to each
other's boat, right. raced with one-another. ....... and that make
each of you special, while me having just joined a year or two ago. i
am just a *Newbie*.... ....
ya know, i don't mind that. i learned very young that if i
wanted to hang with the guys i needed to play by their rules. the
Navy is a prime example.
but ever sense i let it slip that i indeed served on sub's, i
have noted an ever so slightly less tolerant air in my direction.
case in point being one such example. when one has lived a life as i
have; one becomes both tolerant of ignorant people. and adept at
knowing when to say something, and when to just get up and walk away.
now i offered my apology to *Bill* after i understood my
mistake. and i know that even though i did so, an apology just
doesn't *cut-it*. but i can't cut a bound of flesh off my bones and
mail it to Him. nor do i seriously think that He would want it.
further, in my opinion; Mr. Wilkie's disparaging remarks were
un-called for. i don't ever want to hear anything like that again!
don't couch your words in gentle love; your not my daddy! Marsh is
the only one with that title.
i offered to leave this group once before when i screwed-up.
and at that time, i was of the opinion that most all of you though i
should stay. i did. and i continue to stay because of the experience
i have to offer any of those who may wish to take advantage of it.
no, i don't have the vast experience *sailing* many of you do. but i
don't think that trimming sails has any part in the sort of stuff i
have offered up here.
so here is the deal. i've got no problem if the *pound of flesh*
you want is my leaving. just say the word. everything i need to know
about sailing i can learn from Capt. Fred's Damn cat.
or i can stay. it's up to the lot of you.....
i don't feel the need to explain to anyone here why i have
trouble remember's name's. and i sure as hell don't feel the need to
kiss-up to every little old-boys club that sails by. not when i
belong to what is arguably the most elite group in the world. and ya,
that was one hell-of a old-boys club! but they done good!

Just came in and saw this, so don't know if it has been prohibited to
comment yet, but... LET IT GO PLEASE. I am in the camp of Fiver.
Actually, I am in the camp of anyone cool and who doesn't fill my inbox
full of hate or bile or rants. I do not know Wilkie other than to read
posts. I have corresponded w/ Fiver for over a year now and can say she
is one of my favourite people on the 'Net. Enthusiasm means a lot to me.
*Can we PLEASE get back to Cal stuff????*
Sailing content... a BEAUTIFUL day and I was stuck shuttling trucks, not
over working so that I amy ACTUALLY use my boat this year. :-( Kills
me. Wish it would stay like this for a coupla months. This bone-chilling
cold stuff is getting old.

Trivia question
Fin Beven2008-03-06 04:38 UTC
Trivia Questions:
#1
I realize that the Cal-40 is not being well-sailed when the leeward rail is awash,
but ...
is the Cal-40 the only boat in the "Cal" line-up in which the outboard edge of both the head sink and the galley sink are below the water-line when the boat is heeled to the point where water is within an inch or two of the leeward rail ??
#2 If you put 40 or so people aboard in an after-race celebration party, the head rim may be under the waterline, and can terminally over-flow.
Yes, but the party was great !

My CAL 2-29 is guilty of # 1.
It took me a while to figure out why my counter tops were full of water. I practice the 10-15 degree rule now.
I have a porta potty and would not know about # 2.
Thanks Fin!

My other boat, not the Cal, has the galley sink and the port side deck
scupper draining through the same through-hull fitting. That's fine,
it's one less hole in the boat, but if a leaf runs down the deck scupper
hose and plugs things up, rain water on deck will come up the sink, with
unpleasant consequences. I leave the plug in the sink.

At least it is not the sink and the head.

I'll confess that sometimes I plug the head too, but I usually try to
blame it on somebody else.
