Try again, HIN explaination
Rodney G Johnson2008-03-13 15:24 UTC
Close but not quite!
CAB = Cal Boats
S = Cal 33 (pretty sure on that)
0101 = class # (in other words, 101st CAL 33-2 built)
H = August
6 = Year of construction (in other words, built in August 1986)
87 = Actual Model Year
So, this would be the 101st CAL 33-2 built, and she was built in August
1986 as a 1987 Model.
Apparently, CAL Boats/Lear Siegler Marine continued to use the old Model
year (August-July) designation even after changing to the 1984 and later
HIN format.

Jim,
I believe the 101 means yours is the 101st one built. Also, I believe
the 687 means it is a 1987 boat built in June. I have hull number 064
built in May '86

Hull Number Further Complication
I own a 33-2 Cal. I thought I had figured out the hull number etc. but
after this discussion decided to try again.
Here's the number on the stern CABS0101h687.
All I can figure is the 0101 might be metric but sure can't figure why a
US company that has always used feet would suddenly go to meters on
this single boat.
Any other guesses on reading this one?

Rodney and Jim,
I can concur with most of this. Our hull number CABS0089E687
CAB=cal boats
S=Cal 33
089= hull number
E=??
687= at least I agree with the 87 model that agrees with the CG
documentation on the boat
YMMV

Interesting, Darr. We Good Old Boat people in the 60's-70's boats don't
even understand the concept of a "model year". The newest format
appears oddly redundant in the last four digits. This is surprising in
that anybody who planed to sell more than 1000 hulls of a model had to
do some tap-dancing to come up with a model type that was descriptive
within the 5 digits of the 12 digit number.
Typical of bureaucracies. I read an article that said the powers that
be ran out of car VINs even though the code is ungodly long. Too many
letters/numbers for things that would not be used. shortage in other
places.
CAB516570474 - my other boats are too old for a HIN - maybe CAB40058??65

Good point. I guess if you consider stinkpots like Bayliners and such one
might reach a thousand a year or so. I guess they can recycle these things,
like they do with SSNs. How is EYC these days?

HIN explanation and EYC (Darr)
Husar, Charlie [USA]2008-03-15 02:47 UTC
Darr, I was at EYC just last week. EYC (Eastport Yacht Club - Annapolis
for out-of-towners) looks like it did a few years back except for rising
prices. Seems they bought the tawdry (but waterfront) property next
door in an expansion grab. Seems they did it near the top of the real
estate market. They used to be the alternative yacht club concentrating
on a good time. Now it looks like they are trying to compete with AYC -
who is trying to compete with NYYC - who is probably trying to compete
with some chi-chi place in the Med. It goes on and on.
Cheers
Charlie
