mussels and bottom growth

coming up on my first year of Cal ownership and very much appreciate the great degree of knowledge I have been able to gather from you all. Sprinkled with enough BS to make it fun. Since I have already scheduled to pull my boat out this May and paint the bottom and replace my cutlass bearing I have a basic question. Am I getting mussel growth on my rudder and keel asa a sign that the anti-fouling paint has worn off or become ineffective? Does a good coat of the paint prevent these critters from getting established or is it just a fact of salt water boat life? Thanks. Where I am (Michigan), I do not get zebra or quagga mussels on areas covered by bottom paint. They do fasten on to any areas not painted. I'm using an ablative paint on one boat and a hard paint on another. This is in fresh water (Lakes Michigan and Huron) Chris Campbell

Marina in baltimore

Does anyone berth at Bowley's Marina on Middle river in Maryland, or know any information about it. How protected? How Friendly? Does it get a lot of jet fuel carbon on the boats from the air National guard planes at Martin Airport? Thanks, Darr LaFon Alcyone Cal 33-2 1986

I get some growth each month in salt water that is warmer than Puget Sound but still quite cool. I have a diver wipe down the bottom monthly in the winter and every two weeks when the water is warmer in the summer. Depending on the paint type (See Practical Sailor back issues on paints), you should get two seasons from the paint before the antifouling compounds are leached out. At that point, it is time to paint. You should hear from Scott Sauvageot (List CAL 25er). I believe he used to be at Bowley's. Under the heading of not-so-fond memories, a friend and I helped Scott move his boat from there to Annapolis a few years back. Blowing out of the south at 25 or so in the shallow waters of the Northern Chesapeake where the waves get real high and the wave periods get real short. Thank God I had no loose fillings. I'm not sure about Bowleys, but I used to keep my Cal 25 at Chesapeake yachting Center nearby. I rode out Isabel aboard my Cal 25 up there. We were really sheltered on Frog Mortar Creek. The rates were reasonable, the people VERY friendly but we did get a little jet soot. I much prefer sailing in Annapolis, and commute down there from BelAir. That is a fairly long drive, it appears. How long does it take you? I used to live in Annapolis and my boat is on the hard there right now at the Naval Station. But will be living in north Baltimore for schools and job next year and the foreseeable future. my boat is at Young's Boatyard in Edgemere. Good prices and I like the owner. Might give it a look. It's on Jones Creek. Marsh darr lafon wrote: > > That is a fairly long drive, it appears. My understanding that the more traditional hard antifouling paints lose their effectiveness as the biocides leach out, but the ablative paints retain effectiveness as long as there's a paint film. They slough off gradually so you can see when they're not effective any more. The ablatives also retain their effectiveness during extended haul-outs, whereas the hard paints tend to diminish in effectiveness because the copper compounds oxidize. I switched to an ablative on my other boat because it's stored indoors at the marina in the winter and they ban power sanding in the building. With the ablative, I do a bit of touch-up hand sanding (makes a bigger mess than with my power sander & dust collector combo, but the marina says that the rules are the rules....). My Cal has a hard paint and is outdoors where sanding is OK'd. Also, it lives in a low-fouling environment when it's in the water, so it doesn't matter much if the antifouling compounds have oxidized or gone on strike. Chris Campbell
