Does anybody have an interest in a bunch of _Yachting_ issues from the
early and mid 1970s? There are also a few copies of _The Rudder_ and
_Lakeland Boating_ of the same vintage. They're full of interesting
articles and ads. These are at my mother's house and I don't have
enough storage room at my place to take them on. They're located in
mid-Michigan
Just flipping through, I found a big display ad for the Cal 2-46, by way
of example.

Is there a library with a boating section ? Maybe at one of the
Traverse Bay area libraries ? Newport Beach has a "Mariners' Branch"
on Balboa Peninsula with Rudder back to 1900 and the other magazine
back issues. I use it for researching the book. They might be
interested if there is such a section. That's a pretty boat-oriented area.

Old Magazines

I already have a small collection of old YACHTINGs (sure wish I could
afford to add to it!) and have scanned several old CAL ads and posted
them on the "CAL Owners" Web site that is part of www.sailboatowners.com
Actually, I really hate to use the term "old" to describe most of the
magazine issues, as well as the various models of CALs! I'm not exactly
old (43 yoa) but I remember reading several of these "old" YACHTINGs back
when my Dad subscribed...........and seeing them again has been very
interesting!
Unfortunately, Dad didn't have room to keep all those old issues and who
would have thought we'd ever wish we still had them? You know the old
tale of mothers throwing out their kids' baseball cards? Well, in my case
it was my yearly collections of Boat Sales Brochures that I had to throw
out each year prior to the annual Boat shows! BOY I WISH I STILL HAD
THOSE!!
I remember having the CAL 20 brochure (1970 or so), CAL T/4, O'Day
brochure for almost every year from 1969 on.......AVON Dinghies, various
outboard makes, even a lot of (gasp!) powerboats!
I did find a way of saving most of the ones that I collected after 1978
or so. Including the full line CAL brochures for 1978 and 1979 (might be
1977 and 78?). I think those are still posted on-line somewhere, not my
doing.....but someone else who had saved them. Oh, of course I have (and
posted) the CAL 21 brochure!

This is my problem. These are remnants of Dad's old subscription, and
are the issues that survived a flood or two. As a genuine packrat, I
try to keep useful stuff, but these fall into the category of
"interesting" more than "useful." And they are very interesting, for
ads and for articles.

Good idea. A lot of libraries tossed old periodical collections when
they had space and money problems, but I may make a few calls and see if
there's local interest.
