Cal 34 Mk III Repower
Dan2008-03-16 14:55
Has anyone completed a re-power of a Cal 34 Mk III? It seems eminant
that the 1978 we just bought needs to be repowered. It looks to me that
the galley will need dissasembly to make room for removal of the
engine. Any insights and war stories are appreciated.

We repowered our Cal-34 (1972 or so). We also used a Beta Marine.
Love the engine. I don't know the configuration of the Mk III, but
ours had an atomic 4 with a "V" drive. The V drive presented the
biggest issue with the atomic 4 replacement plan. It was not a
direct replacement. Room became an issue and we had to have the oil
pan "trimmed" down so the package would fit and we could align the
prop shaft. Not a huge deal but it did make it so it was not a
direct bolt-on replacement. We did up rebuilding the motor mounts
but it was no big deal.
On a side note. Our new V drive has a 2:1 reverse and a 3:1 forward
reduction. BUT, because of the 3:1 reduction - instead of the 2:1 on
the A4 we had to reconfigure the prop. The calcs said we needed a
diameter larger than we could install - and we really didn't want to
extend the prop shaft so Joe (Morro Bay Boat Yard) decided to use a
much smaller diameter prop with a much larger pitch. I was a little
upset when the prop showed up without my input. However, I am now
VERY HAPPY with the results. The prop drives the boat just fine AND
there is the unexpected advantage that I can now BACK UP in control.
There is virtually no prop walk. I assume it is because the small
diameter doesn't have the "leverage" to the side that causes prop
walk - or something.
Anyway, BETA Marine is a great choice.
Good Luck!

Dan,
I have been following this thread... We too repowered with a Beta Marine (BZ482) with our Cal 2-27. You may need a different model of course, but we are extremely happy with our choice. I our case, I ordered the engine directly from the US Distributor, had it delivered to out dock, and we installed the engine ourself. It's not that hard to do, but it does take some time.

Just a note regarding the repower I did on our CAL 34 So It Goes five years ago.
We went over to electric propulsion and it has worked out really well after taking out the
Atomic 4 and the fuel tank we found we had saved something like a hundred pounds with
the new electric motor, controller and eight Trojan six volt batteries. Yhe other advantage
is that it gave us a new compartment big enough to store all of our dive gear which on a
live aboard boat sailing around the Caribbean is something of a godsend.
So far we have not had any problems nor does it look like any are lurking anywhere I can
think of.
For sure electric propulsion is not for everyone but with a total cost of just around $3000
to $5000it certainly is an attractive option for a lot of us who prefer to sail most of the
time and don't don't motor more than we sail.
There are some bits and links about Electric propulsion in the works on my blog...http://
