Blistering

Does anyone know if the 1985-1990 Cal 28's were factory Barrier coated
below the waterline? If not are they prone to any serious blistering?

Bert, I don't know about the barrier coat (mostly the surface is gelcoat
in production - no barrier coat), but the blistering is more concerned
with the specifics of the individual boat rather than a whole production
run. Things like humidity, temperature, and sobriety play into the
equation on any given day. I've known of whole models (Beneteaus had
the problem for a while) that were blistered due to a new (and faulty)
production process, but I don't think that applies to the Hunt CAL 28 in
production.
Hope This Helps
Cheers

Charlie,
Thanks for the comments. I had a 1985 Catalina 30 until last year and their mid 1980's boats where prone to blistering. Mine had many 1/4" to 3/8" blisters that I ground out and filled with epoxy and then sanded & faired. Shortly after mine was built they started putting on barrier coating at the factory. I am considering buying a 1989 Cal 28 from SC that is in the water all year which makes them more prone to blistering. I do not want to do the work required to fix blister on the next boat I buy. I'm 70 years old and just want to go sailing.
