I can't believe nobody else suggested flogging! It's so traditional and motivational! I was crew in a race last week and I think I got myself in trouble. We were racing to a mark in the fog, I was calling the course and expecting the trimmer to trim the sails so the helmsman could follow the tails. Somehow the communication broke down and I pointed it out afterwards. We were shifting up and down the compass and we got passed by the other boat. I tried to get the trimmer to hold our course so we could make the mark. But the trimmer did not adjust the sails for the wind shifts and we lost our position. What can I do to next time? I am the new guy on the boat. Flogging, The practice was causing the US Navy to have trouble recruiting, with abuses being reported to often and then a few Admirals went before Congress asking they pass a law to stop flogging. Well, that was in 1840 and after ten years of debate, in 1850 Congress finally passed a low stopping the practice. I imagine the Brit's and Spaniard's finally stopped. He's got as Cal 20 so there's "not enough room to swing a cat," making flogging impractical. Randy was on a bigger boat so maybe it would work for him. Chris Campbell

Makes me wonder why the Admirals couldn't stop the flogging themselves. I thought they ran the Navy show.
