Newport to Ensenada

Bill2007-05-02 06:01
Fellow listees: I was invited to crew this year, but instead travelled South via a Honda Accord. Staying at Hotel La Fonda Fri through Sunday, I saw the boats claw there way South past our hotel. It looked painfully slow as we saw the big boats pass Saturday afternoon (18 hours after the start). I was very glad to be ashore rather than racing. Those boats that went outside had little to no wind all night and those that hugged the coast faired better. Saturday afternoon we drove down to race headquarters at the Hotel Bahia, Ensenada ( about 25 minutes)and joined the post race activities. Read Margaritas, music and lies. We stayed until 6:00, checking the race board for finishers. 441 entries and brave 241 finishers. Fastest finisher was 21 + hours. Suprisingly the wind did not allow much kite work as most would expect going South. The 60th N2E was dissapointing for most, but as we all know you can't count on mother nature! We start our Wed beer cans tommorow on the San Diego BAy and are expecting 12-15 knts for the 6:00pm start. Wish us luck. Bill Posner Elysium CAL T/2 San Diego, CA

Maybe this was the exception. Psyche went in and I will ask Steve what kind of wind they had. They also DNF'd. Ralphie was outside at dark Friday but I don't know what they did after that. Maybe they went in. We saw only big boats and cruisers Saturday. Mike Kennedy Conquest Cal 40 # 96

I hope you all are not tired of the Ensenada stories. I am just getting access to a computer. I am so bummed we all missed each other. I ran into Per Curtis and Kurt Ford in Avalon. I would of loved to of met Tim and Leslie. We missed Roger, Mike and others, I hope to meet you all, some day. Hey David, what happened to you? Dave Paulson and I crewed on the Flying Tiger 10m, Superluminal. We had a full crew which in those light winds, might of been to much for a 4800 lb boat. But, we kept moving. We aimed for the outside and wanted to go 4 miles off the Coronados before we tacked back in for the land breeze. But as the battery got low, our digital compass wandered around a bit. At one time we were heading for San Diego on the GPS but the compass kept holding the course to Ensenada. Unfortunately, we didn't realize the compass was wrong till daylight and we could watch both magnetic and digital compass and found out we were going the all over the place but to Ensenada. I saw the tracker on my GPS and could see when we went wrong. Dave has it on computer with the times. Well, another learning lesson. Did anyone ever tell you guys Dave is good behind a tiller! When we did get to fly the Ayso, he kicked butt as well. I hope to sail with him again. Good job Dave! These are things I will always remember, the people we met, A CAL 2-30, the owner sailed 40+, N2E's. The CAL 34 owned by Gordan and his wife who sailed all over the world. Starting behind the MAXI's, TV will never do them justice. we watched them tacking and jibeing at the start line and how the crews worked together. How fast they rolled in the code 0 and back out thru the tack. Ragtime! Need I say more. Whales, we sailed with whales! We had a whale right off our starboard quarter for the longest time on Friday night and when we got daylight the next morning we had two whales off the port bow from us. Dave, and I had the best watch, the wind was blowing and we were hauling. Our watch must have kept us moving at 7+ knots for the entire time. We got up took the helm amd then it was time to get some sleep. After we changed watch, the next watch was hauling, as I was listenening to water speed by the hull, we came to a sudden stop. When I went up to find out what happened, the helmsman could only say, that when the birds flew away, it was to late. We had hit a huge kelp patty. It took us a half hour to pry ourselves out with the boat hook. Yes it was hard sitting there waiting for wind. Especially thinking the inside boats made it in before us. We did not see another boat for hours. But when we saw the MAXI's heading out to the outside we thought, wow. Maybe be are not doing that bad. We made it, the wind started to come up and we set the Ayso and made up miles in no time. But we only made it to three miles from the fininsh when the wind died again. All we could do was watch the cruisers motor by. We got a breeze and crossed the finish line at 1032 or so and that was 31 hours and change. 10 hrs from the first MAXI and 4 and something from the last. We took a 3rd in sprit B. It was a wonderful race, maybe next year will blow. Hope to see you guys next year. Randy, I've been busy, so late to reply. I had a Tuesday Appt. and missed out on Avalon and the Isthmus. Sounds like you and Dave had a great time on a nice light air boat. Kurt's 39 really sails nice and has a very comfortable motion and moves very well in light air. It just didn't handle No air very well and that's when we did the math and headed in. Maybe next year.... Randy, Chuck Lennox and I are crewing on Per Curtiss¹ Freedom 44 this year. She¹s a Cat Ketch, and we are really looking forward to a learning experience. I crewed on a friend-of-a-friend's Freedom 39 once in a race. It was blowing over 20 knots, and the boat's systems were taxed. For example, the main sheet did not have enough mechanical advantage, and it was very difficult to sheet in. Also, we could not tack; we had to fall off and jibe to get on the other tack. It was very fast, however. The owner was a very inexperienced sailor. If any of these characteristics carry over to the 44, I'm sure Per has figured out how to get around them. I am not sure who will go. The local group has plans. I hope the current wind conditions will hold. Maybe something in a size smaller would be better. Yesterday we had the feeder race to Newport. I was on the Flying Tiger. The winds were 21 knots in the channel. It took us less than 12 hours to go the 75 miles from Channel Islands to Newport Pier. We flew the Asso spinnaker most of the way. The seas were 6-8 foot and very long rolling swells. I was at the helm and surfing 13 knts at times. Yahooo. Sustained speed was 8.5-9 kts. We were in first place until we saw the Santa Cruz 50 coming up from behind. It was a reverse start and we started 1 hour before them. We had already smoked the rest of the field. Some where around 1 pm we had our first knock down, I just couldn't rock the ass end over to get it to surf, then another. I got off the helm then two more and the ugliest spinnaker wrap you would ever see. I kept looking up and thinking how are we going to get the mess from around the rolled up head sail. There was now way to get up there if I had to cut it away and the wind was still building. I finally got the spinnaker down and we held 8-10 kts under the jib and main alone. We finally reefed the main around 3 pm after rounding up a couple of more times. I guess we had the vang really cranked down. Never thought about letting it up. I thought after sunset we would get lighter winds but they kept gusting 16-18 knts true wind speed and we decided to pop the spinnaker one more time to close the gap on the Schock 35 and the C&C 115 that passed us in our lesser sail state. We were sailing at 10 knts most of the time but under control. The main was still reefed. Interesting, concept. But the boat was very happy. I was happy. Before we set the Asso the last time, I was repacking the shoot, we rounded up one more time and I was thinking, wow, this is why this is a younger mans sport. Here it is almost dark and we are popping a shoot in 16 kts of wind with 6-8 ft seas. I was thinking Trish wants to cruise more and me race less. After my heart quick pounding in my throat, I opened the hatch and let her fly. It worked. And off we went into the night. Not my best day on the water by far. At one knock down I was sitting on the rail in waist deep water trying not to get sucked under the life lines. The water was boiling and my boots were being sucked off. It was all I could do to get myself up to the main and pull the sheet to get us somewhat upright and moving again so the rudder could get a bite and get us turned in the right direction. We need more wind than last couple of years and less wind than yesterday and today. Randy CAL 2-29 Out Patient Channel Islands Sailing a Flying Tiger 10 M to Ensenada. Randy, Great post. I¹ll be thinking about you guys if it really pipes up. Last year it blew right up to race time and then went dead. This year, they expect conditions to hold. Who the heck knows? The Freedom 44 is probably going to be a bit more docile in 20-25 so if we get our way you are going to have another wild ride. Heh heh heh. I think I¹d rather get my old ass kicked than motor into San Diego on a mill pond like last year. Yup. That¹s a heck of a lot of canvas. I race against a Freedom 37, and it¹s a pretty fast boat in heavier air. It points pretty high, too. I¹ve often wondered if he had any reefs that he could use, cause mostly he just lays over and fights it a lot when the wind kicks up. We¹ll have a reef in the main and a #2 and he¹s still running the full rig. It¹s a much larger and heavier boat, of course, and he does lack experience. She¹s a new boat to Per, but the prior owner won the Newport to Ensenada race a couple of times and the race home as well. She¹s rigged for blue water sailing. He left behind a packet of sail handling and trimming tips and we¹re going to take a couple of afternoons to get familiar with the rig, then the delivery before the race. If all else fails, it¹s still a downwind race barring bazaar weather disruptions.
