Shifter cable help
John2008-04-28 00:13 UTC
Hello Group,
My shifter cable is toast on my Cal 31 (Volvo Penta MD7A) and I'm wondering
if anyone has experience replacing it. I've pulled the compass off and the
pin at the shifter as well as the nut on the other end of the cable at the
transmission. Still does not seem interested in coming out and getting
replaced. So I'm assuming the cable is still attached somewhere in the
binnacle. Advice would be greatly appreciated before I tear out a bunch of
stuff I don't need to.
Thanks,
John Stacklyn

John,
If this is an Edson Pedestal, have you taken loose the cable retainer about
a foot below wheel axle? You can see the installation instruction here:
http://www.edsonmarine.com/support/PDFs/installation/EB396EngineControlInstr
.PDF
On my boat the PO had someone cut holes in the pedestal to remove the cotter
pin instead of removing the bolt and bracket. If you follow the
instructions it is really quite simple.
If you do not have an Edson wheel, the manufacture may have a similar
website with downloadable instructions.
The Morse cable actually have the length as the part number. It is printed
about a foot from one end. This should make replacement easier to find.
Morse cables are used in many marine applications, power and work boats, so
check your pricing at local stores. I found mine at a boat store that
supports the fishing fleets at a price 20% below WM or the sailboat stores.
YMMV

John
if the shifter cable is in an Edson pedestal then yes
there is another clamp done inside to pedestal with a
nut on the outside this is easy an easy off kinda
aggravating to get back on i hope this helps

I have the same interest for my Mk lll 34. I fiddled with it this
weekend and had the same dilema. I look forward to the group's
experience and insights as I'm out of both.

Hi All,
I'd like to order some parts from Joe in CT for my 33-2. I snapped the
engine throttle handle off the Edison pedestal yesterday and am
looking for a more substantial replacement.
Thoughts?
Thanks,

Edson, not Edison. I'll learn to proof read yet.

John R,
Not sure if it is an Edson but it sure looks like one from these diagrams.
It looks like you have to remove both cables because they use one cable
holder for both cables? I will check things out this week and let you know
how it goes. Thanks very much for the help!

John,
There should be enough slack in both cables to access the retaining cotter
pin without destroying any other part of the boat or binnacle.
Let us know what parts you replaced. The Morse cables may be standard for
the 31's.

John R., (et. al.)
It is a Yacht Specialties (Santa Ana, CA) pedestal, and after removing the
compass and the first top plate, there was another plate I removed w/ 4 more
screws after taking the handles off the throttle and shifter. Then it pulled
right up, removed a set screw for the shifter cable only, and, voila, it's a
Morse 33C 7ft cable, ordered online for $32 including shipping. Couple of
pics below for those that can get them. Apparently have to be careful not to
break/lose anything as they have been out of business for years and
hard/impossible to find parts. Hope to get the cable in a week or two and be
cruising to Apalachicola, Carrabelle, Dog Island (all "exotic" North Florida
ports!)
Thanks for the assistance,
John Stacklyn
