May 2 Red Bull Air Race Interferes with Sailing

My brother and I drove to San Diego from Phoenix Fiday only to find the bay and access to the ocean blocked off by the Red Bull Air Race qualifying rounds. http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/metro/index.html We sailed up into a bay full of anchored boats and dropped our anchor. We then watched as plane after plane sped their way through pylons on the water. What a show! It was nice to be able to anchor right in the middle of the channel near the Coronado Bridge. Wind in the south bay was decent, so we elected to sail with just our genoa, and we were still near top speed. It was a lot of fun. An ex-navy man at the marina likes to sail all around the nooks and cranies of the bay playing follow the leader, and past signs that say, "Navy property. Do not enter," etc. When I hesitated to follow him around a tiny bird covered island that had just such a sign posted on it, he said, "Just tell'em you're with me." Past the sign we went, within fifty feet of the shoreline on the Silver Strand, and around the island. He likes to sail into the navy's marina, within about six feet of the shore, around and through the slips, and then back home. He sails both in and out of our marina, so we elected to enter the marina under sail. Once inside the slips, the wind backed on us a bit, but we had enough way to just drop sail and slip right up to our slip. Back to Phoenix by 2:45 P.M. Sunday.

Cool. I was on CAL T/2 Elysium and we had a wonderful time at the air races. Didn't see your 28 but saw a 25. If we had known you were there we might have rafted with you. We had a large group of people on board and put up main and genoa for sail back to harbor island. Nice conditions for the sail home. Did you see the helicopter doing loops after the show? Wow... We did see the helicopter. Thought he was going to stall and crash more than a few times. --- In Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com, "Robert" <rgtsc01@...> wrote: > > Cool.
