Cal 28 MkII (Ray Hunt design)

I'm considering a 1980's vintage Cal 28, the one designed by Ray Hunt. Does anyone know how the keel is ballasted and how attached to the hull? Anything to particularly look out for? TIA - Nick

Nick The keel is lead and bolted and glued to the hull. I don't think it will be a problem. You may see cracks on the outside at the attachment line but so long as there is no water leaking into the bilge it should not be a problem. I just went thru the purchase process of a 1989 CAL 28-2. I previously had a 1985 Catalina 30 for 5 years. I looked at 3 CAL 28's in MA, had one surveyed and refused it. I contacted a person that had one locally. I am purchasing one that is in SC. After having looked at 4 boats and had a discussion with one owner, the problems you will find are items that are typical of any fiberglass boat of the same vintage, one had wet decks another had some delaminating of the deck. A 20 year old boat should have had some if not all the various hoses replaced by now, the running rigging should be in good condition, the standing rigging should be inspected very carefully. The engine should start quickly. Check for blistering of the hull, mine has pea sized blisters on it. Mostly the general condition of the boat will tell you how the boat was cared for. The better the general condition of the boat the better the boat in my opinion. Feel free to contact me off line. Bert Pesak 102 Limekiln Rd. W. Thanks very much, Bert. I'll be sure to check out the attachment. Your note about cracks reminds me of the 'Catalina Smile' :-) As I recall, keel bolts were also an issue with some. Are yours on the Cal stainless? Regards - Nick Subject: Re: [Cal_Boats] Cal 28 MkII (Ray Hunt design) Nick The keel is lead and bolted and glued to the hull. I don't think it will be a problem. I would appreciate it if any and all Cal 28 MkII owners could email me photos of your boats for publication on my Cal 28 web site. I love the interior design of the newer model. I've only seen one online before. I could use the extra content. I'll give you online credit for your posts, and anything else you'd like to say about your boats. Send photos and any text to bruce @ stirlinglaw.com [remove spaces] And the same goes for ANY CAL boats. If you have any online sailing videos of your boats, direct me there and I'll link to your material. Thanks. Nick, The only sailing I 've done was on the sea trial during the survey and I was mostly looking to see that everything worked. The Smile on the Cal is the same as the smile on the Catalina 30 as I had that on my C30 also. The keel bolts are big (3/4 to 1" Dia) & stainless. The boat becomes mine on 5/15/08.
