So Mariposa and AirTime are sitting side by side in the yard and I guess the
2 gals started talking and low and behold Airtime is now demanding I spend
some more time and money on her (So is my lady Catherine) to the extent of a
rudder living on borrowed time. While the machinist was fitting a new rudder
bearing David Wilkie Owen thought he saw the shaft move slightly inside the
rudder . After investigating the movement I found the rudder was just one windy
day from catastrophic failure. If the attachment comes through you will see
the failure of the welds.
So Timm, can you tell me more about your new Schumacher designed rudder
again.
I talked with Foss Foam today, and they certainly remember your name and the
Cal 40 rudder but not the 9.2 rudder per se. His recollection is of
modifying the Cal 40 rudder to fit the 9.2.
Thanks in advance

I had the first and only Shumacher rudder built for the cal 9.2. This was a custom job done in SF by Water Rat. .
The rudder is a vast improvement.
I've been away from home for a few months, and may not be there until June.
I still have the NACA drawings and profile of the rudder in my files there. If I can figure out how to get to the file (paper) maybe Foss could build.
When I get to the office tomorrow, I could send a picture of it. Our stock rudder stalled badley creating lots of knock downs in SF. It finally broke in half out by the Farralone Islands.
I cannot promise much, haven't been home since February. I wonder if Carls widow has access to his work?
I also have a windowed lead keel re-drawn by Ron holland. We had this made by Mars metals. Similar shape, thinner(more lift?), and lower center of gravity.
The pictures look ugly. I hate breakage!
Sorry to see it happen.
Cheers,
Timm Lessley

Back in 2000, you can see how the price changed as we got more people to
buy a run of rudders. This was the Cal 40 rudder effort. We sold 25
initially, and I've heard of many more since. Foss adopted the rudder
shape, and now it is a "stock" plug for many boats.

Dan,
Funny you say that, I've been waiting on a new rudder from Foss. My 29 rudder was full of water, and I watched it and limped from season to season, but this winter was the killer. We finally had real winter and the rudder was toast. Hey, it's only money. I gotta call them Tuesday to see where we are, I need my boat in the water.

Marsh,
Take mine home with you next winter. If you can fit in the lazerette and still be able to move to disassemble it. Originally tiller steered, converted to a wheel.
