Re: [Cal_Boats] Roger Jones
Fellow Cal sailboat lovers,
I am too a lurker/occasional respondent to the CAL LIST coming to light to
tell my simple Roger story. I lived in California from 2004-2007, bringing my
Cal 29 from Lake Ontario in NY to Alameda. At one point in 2005 or 2006 I
wrote something about the work I have done on my beloved Cal and posted to the
CAL LIST. Roger responded and I assume must have been intrigued that a woman
had undertaken some of the things I accomplished. I had some further questions
and he told me he was coming to ALameda to pick up Lori's Comet and that if I
wanted I could come and meet him and see his most recent purchase and talk
some more about the Cals, that he would be at Nelsons. So knowing what this
man had meant to Cal boats and boat building, I thought why not meet what in
my mind was a legend in the making, and I could say I had talked to a man who
had helped build my boat. So I went there. and saw Loris Comet on the trailer,
and talked to this kind man with the sparkly eyes who I felt wanted to
encourage this woman to continue with all the Cal craziness, and some tips given
on spars, repairs etc. I guess I cant remember any of it, but i remember him
as a man of his word and to simply encourage me to continue to sail my Cal. I
guess that is what matter the most. I remembered him. and I did keep many of
this postings.
A thought, can we put all his wisdom from his postings about Cals in a book
of some sort? My god what this man had to offer all of us about these boats we
dump megabucks into. I know that some of you probably have all his
postings. and perhaps we can have one last thought from him on floppy keels...
PS I can get the gut who worked on mine to post what he did. It was an
external fix. More later if wanted....
