Being a member of this list has brought me great joy and a feeling of camaraderie of the water and a shared love of sailing.
Now, it has brought me a great depth of feeling as well. Thank you for this early epitaph and I will add my feeble prayers to yours.

Friends,
I spoke to Roger Jones yesterday evening. First, please let me make his wishes known to all of you. He loves you all and charged me with updating you, but he has asked that you not besiege him with emails or calls that he can not physically return.
I’ve had trouble reaching him via email and phone, but finally reached Lori and she put me through. Roger is very weak and he is unable to handle computer tasks or the telephone. He was very gracious to take my call but we spoke only for a few minutes and I could tell what it took out of him to do so.
Roger has been a wonderful source of information and encouragement to this list and to me and my family personally. When my 92 year old Father in Law suffered a stroke and had to move into assisted living, Roger got personally involved in selling the old man’s Rhodes 19. We were going to have to scrap it due to it’s neglected condition and remote location, but Roger found a buyer who shelled out $600 and picked it up. Roger furnished the tow vehicle and made a 300 mile round trip from Reno to deliver it to it’s new home. Naturally, the bearings on the trailer failed and a tire as well, so it was an incredible hassle for Roger. He was so happy to help out and provided the guidance and rebuilding encouragement to the new owner that made the sale and reclamation of an good old boat possible. As the new owner finished the boat (once again with Roger’s help and guidance,) Roger would send me digital photos to share with the old man who was
thrilled to see someone enjoying his lovely old boat.
I know that my experience with Roger was not unique and that many of you also shared in his knowledge and willingness to help.
Naturally, I am devastated to share with you that Roger has told me in his direct and no frills way that he is dying. He has a great strength of spirit and is without fear. He asked me to send his love to you all and to tell you that “now I will get to spend some quality time with Bill Lapworth and Jack Jensen. I have missed Jack for so many years.”
Roger has a solid faith and we shared our hopes together. I am glad that I had an opportunity to say goodbye to him and I want you all to know that I took the liberty of thanking him and saying goodbye on behalf of the Cal List as well.
I will be praying for Roger and Lori. I would invite those of you who are so inclined to join me.

I just talked to Roger and Lori. They have a Cal 2-30 in Vallejo that
she will have to sell now. If anyone knows anyone in the market, that
would help. Mike Jr is also going to look around. He lives in the Bay
Area. I told Rog that we will have a drink and smoke a cigar for him
at the LAYC Stag Cruise next weekend. He was to go with us but begged
off about 3 weeks ago. He told me about the diagnosis when he told me
he couldn't make Ensenada this year.
I wish I had badgered him more for more stuff on Cal 40 history. We
were always going to do it.
Carpe Diem,

This is so sad. I talked to him offlist a few times and he was always so
helpful and nice. I really will cherish the help and encouragement he
gave me.

I wanted to post this information as a separate topic of discussion.
Roger took on the project of restoring and modifying Cal 29 Hull #1, ³Swiss
Navy.² It was a huge undertaking, and he was wise enough to buy another Cal
boat to sail on and enjoy in the meantime.
Lori would be happy for somebody with a sense of Cal history and some space
to have ³Swiss Navy.² All you have to do is pick her up in Reno, Nevada.
This may not be all that easy to do, but please inquire.
