the early 27's were laid up with a void in the aft edge of the keel where it curves up into the hull. Water would eventually find its way in there and in higher latitudes, would freeze when the boat set out over the winter. freezing broke the external "shell" exacerbating the problem. there was also a hunk of wood in there which could rot out over time. Mine's fixed! I agree with the possibility of too much weight resting on the keel when out of the water would be bad and lead to cracking and failure. A similar problem could happen when trailered. Chris and others,There is a Cal 27 in the yard near my boat that has flex cracks in the cove on both sides of the keel. They were seeping water when it came out. The back edge of the keel had been repaired; ground into a scimitar curve and re-glassed to stop water from coming in. Mike Pyzel, who has been counseling me on my repair work, pointed this out to me as a standard problem on the 27’s.I have no doubt that Mariposa would have eventually gone that way absent my intervention. I will cove what I have done and am doing in another post.Regards,Wilkie From: Chris H <ch… [at] magma.ca>Reply-To: <Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com>Date: Thu, 5 Jun 2008 11:04:17 -0400To: <Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com>Subject: Re: [Cal_Boats] Keel Wobble was Cal 25 fleet rule #20.... I've seen this in some local marinas where the owners are responsible for winter storage rather then the yard manager. In our setting the boats come out in Oct and are splashed by mid June so that's almost almost 8 months of sitting in the hard in some cases with the added windage of a mast still up. Just wondering? Not sure if this is applicable however in the warmer latitudes however? Back to lurkingRegards-- /ch

well, there is a void of some sort in the aft edge of my '25's keel, behind the sump. This was a bit of a surprise.....there was also quite a bit of glass w/ NO resin saturation whatsoever!!
