More serious issues - Ginger Beer for D & S

Tom Vandiver2008-06-10 10:31 UTC
Having gained a fancy for Dark and Stormys in the last few years and really enjoying them, I have a query. Which ginger beer do the wise ones on our Cal group prefer? Down here in the Red Neck Riveria, Captain Eli's is readily available. Occasionally we get another ginger beer, forgot the brand, that is better than nothing. Last weekend a good neighbor acquired some D & G ginger beer from Jamaica, which suits my test better than any of the others. Since my good buddy, old retired Army aviator Tex Hill get together twice a week to share Dark and Stormys, we need to get a big supply of the excellent D & G. What do y'all like? Another question, how do you mix your D & S's, or do you mix them. We fill a tall glass almost full of ice, then pour in the ginger beer and lay the Goslings on top. It mixes itself as you sip. Cal content: Neighbor Richard Birge, Cal Cruising 46 #9 is having his boat trucked to Seattle as he works in Valdes, Alaska as a tug boat skipper and the commute to Pensacola is long. So, you PNW folks keep a lookout for "Jack-A-Hearts". He brought me a bottle of Goslings yesterday and usually has some on board. Tom and Bobbie Vandiver, Cal 46 & 25 on Bayou Chico,FL

Tom, It's difficult to find decent ginger Beer around here, every bottler seems to have a different recipe. Stewarts is the only thing available with a few specialty stores selling exotic brands. I have changed my D & S to D & D (Dark and Diet) a bit fewer calories from sugar. Both recipes require a little Angostura bitters (just a dash) to take the sweet taste of the mixer down a notch. Try it in your next D & S, you will enjoy the extra taste. Tom: My savannah friends used a ginger beer from Australia. Don't remember the brand, but it was quite good and came in brown bottles. Recipe was like yours only add just a hint of mint - a small crushed leaf from the garden Janet Plume, Editor/Gulf Shipper 826 Fern Street New Orleans, La. 70118 504-866-7076 cell: 504-250-4539 email: jp… [at] joc.com We are what we repeatedly do. Barritts from Bermuda. Take large lime wedge, squirt into glass and dump the wedge in. Add the GBSR. Dump in Barritts down edge to minimize early foaming, and put ice on top. We have inverted methods, Tom. Back in my R&R days, I knew some clubs that would pour the shots on top - half shots, that is. It would taste strong at first so the customer never knew the diff. Then there was the thing called "rips and tips". "Those were the days, my friend. We thought they'd never end..." By the way, G&T with diet tonic and lime is a very refreshing summer drink. No syrupy taste like regular tonic mix. Hay you guys in Seattle I am sure you are familiar with Meritime Pacific Brewing co., if not try them, they have a wide variety of hand crafted brews and a cute pub that serves great lunches, you might want to arange a tour as an activity for your cruise. I always have it on my muat do list when in Seattle.
