I need a shower
glen thorpe2008-08-01 04:11 UTC
OK, not me personally but my boat. I would like to install a shower in my Cal 29 but I think it may be a bad idea. Do any Cal 29 owners have showers on their boats? Will this exacerbate the dreaded beam problem? I have the original beam in mine.
Regards,
Glen

We have a shower in our 2-29, however we never use it. When we go out we
usually have our 2 teenage boys with us which means we have to restock food
every 3 days. So we just put into port and use the showers there when we
are stocking up. I have run the shower few times to make sure everything
works and it seems to be fine. As long as the water drains past the beam
ok, I think you would not have a problem with the beam.

Question, doesn't the shower pan drain under the dreaded beam? Is there enough space below the beam for the water to pass without contacting the beam?

Nah, it just passes through the rust holes. ;-) Just kidding. There are
channels the water passes through.

The ³slot² under the beam is pretty narrow and a lot of crud can channel
down there through the years, stopping it up. Our late Roger Jones¹ beam
design flattened the bottom radius of the beam to make that slot decidedly
larger. It is definitely a good idea to back-flush that area from time to
time via the bilge. Roger even suggested a 3² inspection plate in the
³tunnel² portion of the pan on the head side, which would probably
facilitate clean-out as well.
My shower drain holes quit draining a couple of years before my beam repair
began. The beam slot was plugged with rusted beam by that time.

I took my shower wand out. When I am out at the islands I just fill a sun shower with water and a add 2 quarts of hot water from the tea pot and shower in the cock pit.
I didn't like the mess in the head. Plus I read somewhere, that all the hair and soap scum builds up in the bilge giving you all kinds of problems, ie... pluged bilge pumps and terrible smells.

I have not taken my shower wand out but have never used it for the reasons
Randy gave and mostly because of the limited water supply on board.
We just returned from a trip to Desolation Sound. We carried two 4 gallon
sunshowers on the deck which is of course additional to the water in the
tank. The sunshowers are great. Even in partly cloudy weather, they get
warm enough for a comfy bathing. When we weren¹t near a shower at a marina,
a lake we could walk to, or a stream, we used them. Despite this, with a
family of four we depleted our water in about 3 days just cooking and
cleaning dishes.
That brings me to another question (which perhaps should be another thread):
Have any of you other Cal 29 owners increased your water supply?
If so, what did you use for tanks?
Has anyone had experience with flexible tanks and how did they work?

Terry,
I have three plastic containers that I got at a sporting good store. I
think they hold 8 or 10 gallons each and they are compact enough to drop
down into the lazarette for Island trips. I just dump one at a time into
the main tank when/if I run out of main water supply.
