Prisoners, Santa Cruz Island
Randy Alcorn2008-08-06 04:14 UTC
Hey gang,
The Ventura Sailing Club is putting on a race 6-7 Sept at Prisoners on Santa Cruz Island.
You sail out there Friday or Saturday, have the skippers meeting at one of the boats Saturday night then sail off the hook on Sunday. You can paddle, swim, tow your boat with a dingy, what ever it takes to escape with out using your motor to get out of there.
You normally sail to either Ventura Harbor or end up at Channel Island harbor.
I did this race last year on another boat because Out Patient was down for a boken strut, I had a lot of fun.
Good group of folks.
If you don't race and decide to go to the islands that weekend I will be looking for you.
Anyone interested?

Not sure how it will pan out, but in theory I wouldn¹t miss it for the
world! Mariposa will definitely be back in the water, but I¹ve got a busy
August and September planned and am unsure what I can do to get away.
I have been hoping to do a week long Island Trip (Circumnavigate Santa Cruz
and check out all the anchorages I have yet to visit) starting around the
end of August, but I have a San Francisco trip to do and am running out of
weekends.

Wilkie,
How is the keel repair coming along? Any updates or things we can inspect for while in the water that would indicate onset of latent keel wobble?

Ok,
Say we slip anchor and sail out of Prisoners Cove at Santa Cruz Island, where is the finish line? Or is it first book off the hook and underweigh wins?
I was up at Ventura Harbor yesterday. It must be the most beautiful harbor in all of Southern California. I went up there to purchase a new van (new to me) from a fellow who's wife as a boutique next to the Seven Seas Bar. Couldn't help going Gaa Gaa over a Cal 46 moored at the end of the dock, next to a Santa Cruz 50. Couldn't make out the name of the vessel, but it ended in an ...AUI"

Jerry,
You should of let us know, we were blessed with your presence. The CAl 46 was the CAL 48 Wahuiv (SP) and is docked next to the SC 50: 5150. I have yet to sail on her but am invited and looking for an opening in my schedule.
So, I think the finish is normally shared between Ventura and Channel Islands Harbors.
It is normally determined at the skippers meeting on Saturday night on the biggest boat in attendance.

Keel fountain: was- Prisoners, Santa Cruz Island
David Wilkie Owen2008-08-08 19:03 UTC
Keel repair is done. Cabin Sole installed, wanting only for arrival of teak
and holly veneer. Cabin and cockpit being prepped for painting next Monday.
Inspection in the water would just be to dive and look for cracks in the
bottom paint where the keel joins the hull. Easier to see as you haul the
boat, because the cracks will weep for a while after the rest of the hull is
dry. My cracks were not severe enough to show through the barrier and
bottom coat, but I saw them clearly when stripped to the gel coat. I am
positive that the increased keel flex was due to broken tabbing and removed
engine stringers.
Keel had a half gallon of water and a fair amount of engine oil in the voids
around the lead. The lead and glass were solidly bonded half the way up
from the bottom, but a band of voids around the top half. Fun stuff. Photo
attached if it comes through....

David,
Your pitcher came thru fine! Weeping keeling? Well, for crying out loud, it looks more like Niagara Falls, when it started out as a little one. What did you do to fix the keel?
