Leaving in October
ira reba2008-08-06 19:49 UTC
Hello Group,
I'm leaving from Boston in mid to late October down to the Bahamas, then the Caribbean . Probably go to Bermuda first by ICW, then outside somewhere in Virginia. Someone suggested getting a # 4 jib and a storm trysail (.....just in case). Is that sound advice? I know "the more, the merrier, but......
I own a very sturdy 33' sailboat with a mainsail (plus spare, older main) and roller furled 110 genoa (plus a spare 135?). Also, I have what looks like a spinnaker but P.O. said no pole is necessary. It is nylon, with sheets, snatch blocks and what looks like a plastic guard which probably goes over the furled genoa for chafing. Haven't used it yet. (Ed Laing, if you're out there, give me a call).
At any rate, I'm seeking suggestions, routes, contacts from anyone who has recently done this trip. My grand plan is to be in St. John for the Super Bowl, and Trindad for Mardi Gras.
Also, I'm looking for crew for this trip...part way, all the way. Please contact me. In advance.........
Thanks,

If this is your first trip SERIOUSLY consider finding an offshore experienced skipper.
Even if you must pay him, it's still cheaper than a funeral.

Find some of the local cruisers in your area. The SSCA just had their
summer get together in islesboro. Check out
http://ssca.org/cgi-bin/pagegen.pl?pg=home
<http://ssca.org/cgi-bin/pagegen.pl?pg=home&title=Home> &title=Home
There are numerous cruisers that summer in Maine and winter in the Caribean.
They usually have their GAM in Newbern NC late October to gather for one
last time before heading south. Beaufort NC is a popular jump off point to
go South. West across the Gulf stream to Log 65w and follow it south to the
islands!
There are several crusier nets on the internet. Several have crew postings
and crew wanted pages.
And of course, if you make it to Oriental NC..
Send me a note
John
