Re: [Cal_Boats] Cal 29 leak (Wilkie)
Wilkie: Thanks, I'll have to take a look at that area. Having a 3-29 only gives me access from the starboard cockpit locker, and not very good access at that. I have to admit that my eyes have not moved much past the steering quadrant/rudder area as far as inspection. I'll give a look on Sat.

Les,
Its in the actual scupper, where a roughly 2 hole is molded into the cockpit scupper and bonded to the hull where it passes through. There are no hoses draining the 29s cockpit. Its a pretty easy fix, but involves glassing to do it rigid. I suppose some 5200 used as caulking would work also applied lying on your side in the lazarettes with fingers and vinyl gloves?
I had a crew members cell phone destroyed when he thoughtlessly used the sink in the galley as storage during a heavy air race, so I know water can come up through that sink, but on Mariposa it would drain back into the ice box since the fiddles around the counter would contain it.

Wilkie: is the leak in the bottom of the drain or in the deck/hull joint in that area? It is a very odd setup.

Randy,
You are single handedly keeping Cal 29 racing alive in these parts.
I am concerned about your leak. Other than the obvious thru-hulls and shaft packing there is a secret leak that Cal 29s can develop. Its in the scupper at the aft end of the cockpit sole. When the deck half of the boat is joined to the hull half there have been instances of failure that I was made aware of by a surveyor in Seattle. Its an easy fix but not easily detected. In following seas or sailing or motoring up near hull-speed that cockpit drain is under water.
