RE: [Cal_Boats] (Tom & Bobbie) + Hurricane prep Hello Gustav NOLA(Tom)
Good Luck Tom!
I was out body surfing in Camille the afternoon before it sideswiped Pensacola, then the evening it passed by 50 miles off shore I went out riding my motorcycle in it. I tried riding out to Pensacola Beach but the draw bridge was left opened and I could'nt get accross. It was pretty strange driving over that long high bridge to the inner island, I was driving straight ahead but the bike was leaning over like I was taking a sharp curve at high speed, while doing this the zipper on my rain jacket ripped off at the seam. The waves in the bay were short choppy and over 15 feet high, like the Jolly Green Giants child playing wave making in a gigantic bath tub.
As I drove back to the base BOQ tree branches flew passed my windshield. The next morning I heard that a tornado had ripped the roof off one of the swim pool buildings. Made me feel pretty foolhardy, none the less, the next afternoon, after classes one of my classmates, a former competitive swimmer, like myself, and I tried body surfing in the waves left over from the storm. There were huge breaking waves as far out as we could see, and we couldn't find were they were starting to break no matter how far out we swam. We tried catching a few waves near the beach, but each time the waves would pick us way up and slam us head first into the sandy bottom; lucky we didn't break our necks!
In the days that followed we heard horror stories about bodies found tied up to trees on coastal islands further west from us; that Biloxi, Mississippi had been wiped out. It was off limits for some time after that, and the highway kept closed.
When I did finally drive to New Orleans two months later I was amazed at the devastation, homes reduced a random piles of giant toothpicks on top bare foundations, surrouded by a lot covered with sand drifts. Ships sitting high and dry on the beaches. One of the major tall highway bridges over a bayou had its concrete pilings uprooted, and the roadway missing.
The 'city' looked like the aftermath of a hydrogen bomb attack.
A year later I saw the headlines of a Popular Science Magazine cover: Worst Hurricane in History, Winds Clocked at 225 MPH.
So, take care. They are now predicting Gustav will be a Category 5 storm by tomorrow afternoon. Material things can be replaced, loved ones can't

Tom;
Thanks your
note – I spent most of the afternoon spidering Tesoro but will have to go back
tomorrow to finish the job.
I am on
high ground so even if the city becomes new beachfront for the gulf of mexico I
will be high and dry.
Will send
you an update as I can later next week

Gustav NOLA
Janet,
We hope you will be okay. As I remember you are on high
ground. Weather Underground, Dr. Jeff Masters, who has almost always been
right on predicting hurricane path, wind velocity and surge is suggesting
everyone get out of NO. He is predicting Gustav to be about 70% of the size
of Katrina and approaching LA. as a Class 3 or 4.
If you decide to evacuate, you and your friends are
welcome. If you stay be prepared and ready to protect yourself after the
storm.
It appears we are east of the projected cone, so we are
resting easier but it ain't over till Gus goes ashore. I have not put Bravura
on her trailer yet, just pulled the boom w/mainsail and tied her up like a
spider web. If there is any change we will step the mast tomorrow and try to
get her on the trailer. I will ride it out on Satori as I have all the
hurricanes since 1995.

Tom:
The latest track has Gustav veering toward
Lake Charles. There is so much hysteria here I think they will
evacuate the city whether the storm comes here or not.

Thanks for the birthday greeting. Actually it was July 27. Never
thought I would live this long - 70. It has been/is a great life, even
with "physical challenges".
Up late at night looking at all the WX sites. Hurricane
Gustav is heading our way. I will make a decision tomorrow about putting
our Cal 25 Bravura on her trailer. We already have our Cal 46, Satori
prepped and in her slip behind our house on the bayou. Depending on
predictions will set anchors, haul the pontoon boat, put chain across our
cove, empty the BSH,(during Ivan 15 Sept. '04 we had 6' of water in the
BSH) and more work. Dang, hope Gus goes elsewhere.
At least in SoCal you did not have several days of sweating an
earthquake.

By the way Tom! A
belated birthday to you... I think it was the 16th of July if I'm not
