Sailboat that turned in front of MV NANTUCKET_1984

The story you seek was rather strange! I've seen the video many times,
and still can not figure out what the skipper of that schooner was
thinking? The ferry was the 230' MV NANTUCKET, twin-screw end-loading
vessel on the Hyannis-Nantucket run. The schooner was approx. 50' LOA and
was under power at the time, the Nantucket was coming into Hyannis on her
afternoon run and the REVELER (50' schooner) was outbound. For some
reason, and I can only assume a steering failure, the Reveler simply
turned right across the bow of the Nantucket. The engines can be heard
screaming in reverse on the Nantucket, but stopping a 230' ship in a
narrow channel is not going to happen within that short distance! All
persons from the schooner were rescued, I don't recall any serious
injuries, but to say the least it clogged up Hyannis for a day or so.
Believe it or not, the schooner was actually salvaged and is sailing
again! I'm sure that there isn't much of her original structure still
there.....but she was actually rebuilt!
I think one thing that may have "reduced" the damage to the schooner was
that the bow on the Nantucket is raked enough that the schooner was
pushed down as she hit, instead of the Nantucket driving through and
cutting the hull in 2.
I still have a couple of newspaper clippings from the Cape Cod Times with
pictures of the aftermath.

Thanks for the responses and the completion of the story. I imagined the
person on the bow not making it. Nice to know there was a happy ending.
