Reminder: GOBR Oct 11 & 12

The Good Old Boat Regatta in Annapolis will be held on October 11 and 12,
and there is still time (and room) to enter for either or both days. The
event is open to any boat whose first hull of the model was laid in 1975 or
earlier. The entry form and more information can be found at:
http://www.goodoldboat.com/resources_for_sailors/sponsored_regattas/2008_GOB
_regatta.php
(or http://tinyurl.com/3q2k6o for a shorter address)
Now, I have to tell you that this is the one, the only "race" that I enter
all year. Some of the classes - like the Cal 25 fleet - are pretty
competitive, but in general, this is a totally laid back event that not only
accepts participation by non-racing skippers and boats, but actively
encourages it. It's two days of gorgeous old boats orbiting a set of
government marks south of the Bay Bridge in very loose formation. And the
formation gets a bit looser at the post-race parties on both days. (There's
even a live music "jam" on Saturday night.) Trophies are awarded by the
number of boats in a class; it takes just three boats to have your own
class. If there are fewer than three boats of a given model, they are placed
in either the Fin Keel or Full Keel handicap class, which is based more or
less on PHRF ratings (though you don't need a rating to participate; we'll
figure out something). Most classes race non-spinnaker, to keep it fun and
easy.
So far, Jambalaya is the only Tartan 34C entered, and I'd really rather
finish DFL in a class of three than in the bigger handicap fleet. So if you
know of any who might be interested, please encourage them to join in. Since
I'm POC for the event, feel free to come back with any questions you might
have.
This event is great fun, and I've made a lot of good friends through it over
the years. I hope that you'll be there this year.
