It is indeed a CAL 25, Marsh. But if that is really a hole on the Falcon, I fail to see how a CAL 25 could have made it. Unless that is, the CAL 25 has lifting foils and the Maltese Falcon is made from paper maché. Also note that there is not a lot of running to the scene on board the Falcon. Husar, Charlie [USA]2008-10-09 17:32 UTC
Some years ago in the Chesapeake, there was an article in the Annapolis paper about recreational boats approaching freighters under way too closely. The accompanying photo showed a CAL 25 near the bow of a freighter. However, the anchor on the freighter was obviously down, and the freighter was obviously not moving. There was an incident a few years ago when a salty "tall ship" was in the dredged shipping channel in Lake St. Clair (between Lakes Huron and Erie, basically) and a freighter was approaching. The helmsman asked the captain if he should move out of the channel but the capt., apparently not familiar with the hydrologic effects of very big boats in very small channels, ordered him to maintain course. The smaller vessel got sucked toward the larger one with entanglement of rigging and topmast destruction. He shoulda known better. A lot of skippers of recreational vessels know even less and do even stupider things. Reminding them about common sense is worthwhile. Chris Campbell >
