David,
I think you might be getting the wrong impression of diesels from these forums. After all, people only chime in when they have problems. I had an Atomic 4 on a Catalina 30 and it was very reliable but there was certainly more maintenance on that than on my current 4 cylinder Universal 5432 diesel. After all the Atomic requires periodic attention to not only the carb and plugs as you mention, but the points, condensor, distributor cap, and the plug wires. Diesels have none of those issues and most are also fresh water cooled. I'm not putting the A4 down (mine was great too) and I wish you many years of service but I think diesels are clearly the engine of choice. Now that I've said that, I'm sure mine will blow up next weekend!

Dave,
I had some actual experience with a diesel this year. I crewed on a boat in the Chicago-Mackinac race this year, a 333 mile race. Well, we had some nasty weather toward the end of the race, and that diesel engine wouldn't run for more than a minute before it quit, water in the separator, again and again. We got to the point that we were almost out of power for the instruments and lights. I raced on that boat for 2 years and we never had problems like that. They ain't foolproof.
