I think you are confusing a couple of different designs/models. There never was a "raised salon" version of the 40, only the standard trunk-cabin design that "shook the racing world" so to speak. You may be thinking of the CAL 36/CAL-Cruising 36 designs, same 36' hull, but 2 different decks (C-C 36 had a "raised-salon"). The CAL 35 that I sense you are referring to would be more correctly called (although, I'm not sure CAL actually did call it this..) the CAL-Cruising 35, this boat was more or less a smaller version of the CAL 46 (AKA: CAL-Cruising 46, CAL 2-46, CAL 3-46) and had a fairly deep, wide cruising hull with long, somewhat shallow fin-keel and separate spade rudder. Hull was more "motorsailer" in shape, like the 46. There was also a CAL 35, designed by Lapworth, that was more of a typical CAL "cruiser/Racer" design, with a narrower hull with deep fin-keel and spade rudder. This design had a more "racing" hull form with a narrower stern than the C-C 35. There was a later design by C.Raymond Hunt Assoc. the CAL 44 that had a raised salon deck on a more racy hull shape. There should be some info on the www.sailboatowners.com web site, under CalOwners.com I know that I posted some info there, but with recent changes on that website the info may or may not be still there. It appears that both originally had a "raised Saloon" option, is that correct? The Bill Lapworth design with the large plexiglass deadlights? Or was that the original design and then they changed to a sleeker look? Is there a web site that has some detailed information on the two boats and their different options? Are both capable of offshore passages or is the Cal 35 more of a coastal cruiser? Did some originally come with the "long range cruising" set up with larger capacity tanks or were they refitted for longer cruising with larger water, fuel and holding tanks?
