The Cal 39 below has several different layouts below and ours has an aft
cabin to port, aft facing nav station to port and galley to starboard. It is
very comfortable below.
The way the boat is rigged it really takes 7-8 people to race it effectively
so we are going to try and run more lines aft so that the main trimmer can
also be the pit guy. We've not looked at it that close yet to see if this is
possible as with an offset companionway to starboard, it may not be possible
to get all the lines over there without excessive angles. Right now it has a
winch on the deck on either side of the mast with jammers that we want to
replace with clutches. The outhaul is on the boom and we'd like it to be led
back to the cockpit as well as the reefing lines for the main trimmer. Right
now all the main trimmer can do is trim the main sheet and nothing else.
Other mods we'd like to make are adjustable car leads for the genoa. Right
now you can not adjust them under load. We have non self tailing winches
with cleats that ideally would be replaced with self tailors but for now we'll
likely just remove the horn cleats and replace with cam cleats.
The spin pole had both end fittings corroded shut but we were able to find a
carbon pole the less than 1/2 the normal price so that made my bowman happy.
We have a CS 30 that we are selling that is tricked out for racing and had
everything led aft and we could race it in light air with 3 people and in
heavier air with 5 so our goal is to get down to 5 needed if possible. It gets a
bit busy back there with 27 lines but at least you don't have to run forward
to do everything.
That's all I can think of at the moment. The Lapworth 39 is a fast boat and
we rate the same as a Cal 40 right now at 120 on the Chesapeake. We have
hank-on sails and a 2 blade prop and if I can find the money, we'll add a
Harken roller furler and a Kiwi feathering prop for next year so we should remain
at 120.
Hope this helps -

What modifications are you making for racing around the buoys?

Having just purchased a Lapworth 1980 model Cal 39 I can tell you that it is
probably the best of both worlds. That said, most have been used
exclusively for cruising and will take some serious $$$ to rig for racing which is what
we are running into. For long distance point to point it is not too bad but
for round the buoys, nothing is easy to do in a hurry and that is what we
are now in the midst of rectifying.
We have the short rig and a one off draft of 6' and in a 0-5 kt wind with
crap sails and a fixed 2-blade prop, we kept a J-24 within a quarter mile of
us which I thought was respectable for a 19,000 lb boat. She's much happier
(and so am I) in 15-20kts but she isn't the light air pig I was expecting. I
should note that I also spent a good 6 months of evenings fairing the bottom
which helped immensely.

Thank you.
As I get into this I wonder if I might be better off leaving round the buoys racing to one design dinghys and find a Cal or other boat to cruise with. Not that speed in a cruising boat would be a bad thing and running lines aft to the cockpit for shorthanded or solo sailing always seems a good idea.

Quite honestly, we are having the same discussion re one design dinghys.? Our club sails in 2 locations and the other location is in shallower waters and most of the members have purchased Tanzer 22's which look like small Cal 25's.? We determined that for the price of a new set of sails for the 39 we can buy a Tanzer 22, new sails for it and a year's slip fee and be able to race one design with some really good racers on a weekly basis.? You'd think it would be a no brainer but I really want to do Annapolis to Bermuda and Newport and eventually cut the dock lines and cruise for a couple of years so we are gonna suck it up and spend the money to get this one up to speed if I still have a job in a couple of months.
We?try to?look for the best of both worlds as we like to race and cruise.? We currently have a CS 30 for sale which is a fast and roomy 30 footer which a lot of people have said lives like a 34.? It rates 156 on the Chesapeake and is very solidly built and we just wanted a bigger version capable of offshore racing/cruising.

Dave -
Have you looked at a CS 30? You might compare the two before going to the 36. I say that because we looked at going to a CS 36 and it didn't have an appreciable amount of extra room over the 30.? They really do live large inside and rate the same as a Cal 36 on the Chesapeake if you are going to race and cruise.
No offense to Cal owners either but the construction quality on the CS I'm selling is much better than the Cal 39.? Don't get me wrong, the design of the 39 is great, I just think the construction quality?suffered due to having been thru 3 (?) different builders in its lifespan.? This may not be the case with other Cals.

The spin pole had both end fittings corroded shut but we were able to find a carbon pole the less than 1/2 the normal price so that made my bowman happy.
?
We have a CS 30 that we are selling?that is tricked out for racing and had everything led aft and we could race it in light air with 3 people and in heavier air with 5 so our goal is to get down to 5 needed if possible.? It gets a bit busy back there with 27 lines but at least you don't have to run forward to do everything.
?
That's all I can think of at the moment.? The Lapworth 39 is a fast boat and we rate the same as a Cal 40 right now at 120 on the Chesapeake.? We have hank-on sails and a 2 blade prop and if I can find the money, we'll add a Harken roller furler and a Kiwi feathering prop for next year so we should remain at 120.
?
Hope this helps -

Thank you.
I gather the 39 is more comfortable below decks.
What modifications are you making for racing around the buoys?

Paul,
I came across one of your posts on csoa as I was checking msgs. I also looked at the cs36 but my budget would not allow. From what I have seen the 30 is a nice boat, I think my heart may be set on the Cal 36 in fact my wife really liked it and told me to get it. The only problem I have to sell the 27 first.

Have you looked at a CS 30? You might compare the two before going to the 36. I say that because we looked at going to a CS 36 and it didn't have an appreciable amount of extra room over the 30. They really do live large inside and rate the same as a Cal 36 on the Chesapeake if you are going to race and cruise.
No offense to Cal owners either but the construction quality on the CS I'm selling is much better than the Cal 39. Don't get me wrong, the design of the 39 is great, I just think the construction quality suffered due to having been thru 3 (?) different builders in its lifespan. This may not be the case with other Cals.

The Cal 39 below has several different layouts below and ours has an aft cabin to port, aft facing nav station to port and galley to starboard. It is very comfortable below.
The way the boat is rigged it really takes 7-8 people to race it effectively so we are going to try and run more lines aft so that the main trimmer can also be the pit guy. We've not looked at it that close yet to see if this is possible as with an offset companionway to starboard, it may not be possible to get all the lines over there without excessive angles. Right now it has a winch on the deck on either side of the mast with jammers that we want to replace with clutches. The outhaul is on the boom and we'd like it to be led back to the cockpit as well as the reefing lines for the main trimmer. Right now all the main trimmer can do is trim the main sheet and nothing else.
Other mods we'd like to make are adjustable car leads for the genoa. Right now you can not adjust them under load. We have non self tailing winches with cleats that ideally would be replaced with self tailors but for now we'll likely just remove the horn cleats and replace with cam cleats.

Hey!? If "the wife" likes it you are miles ahead of a lot of guys out there.? I am fortunate to also have a wife who loves sailing as much as I do so that makes life much easier.? We often wonder what we'd do if we didn't sail.? I say "I don't know but we'd have a sh*tpile more money ;-).?
Prepare yourself for that reality.? All your costs will go up exponentially.? Find a boat with as much extra "stuff" on it as you can get.? Our Cal came with 13 sails, 5 year old Yanmar, new boom, new traveller, new radar, chartplotter, pedestal, rudder, elec panel, vhf and even with all that we still have a lot to spend on her to get her up to what we want.
He even left a bunch of tools and othe "stuff" on the boat to the point it took me 5 pickup loads to empty the boat.
Good luck -

Having just purchased a Lapworth 1980 model Cal 39 I can tell you that it is probably the best of both worlds.? That said, most have been used exclusively for cruising and will take some serious $$$ to rig for racing which is what we are running into.? For long distance point to point it is not too bad but for round the buoys, nothing is easy to do in a hurry and that is what we are now in the midst of rectifying.
We have the short rig and a one off draft of 6' and in a 0-5 kt wind?with crap sails and a fixed 2-blade prop, ?we kept a J-24 within a quarter mile of us which I thought was respectable for a 19,000 lb boat.?She's much happier (and so am I) in 15-20kts but she isn't the light air pig I was expecting.? I should note that I also spent a good 6 months of evenings fairing the bottom which helped immensely.

Paul,
I came across one of your posts on csoa as I was checking msgs. I also looked at the cs36 but my budget would not allow. From what I have seen the 30 is a nice boat,? I think my heart may be set on the Cal 36 in fact my wife really liked it and told me to get it. The only problem I have to sell the 27 first.

Have you looked at a CS 30? You might compare the two before going to the 36.
Don 't get me wrong, the design of the 39 is great, I just think the construction quality?suffered due to having been thru 3 (?) different builders in its lifespan.? This may not be the case with other Cals.

The Cal 39 below has several different layouts below and ours has an aft cabin to port, aft facing nav station to port and galley to starboard.? It is very comfortable below.
?
The way the boat is rigged it really takes 7-8 people to race it effectively?so we are going to try and run more lines aft so that the main trimmer can also be the pit guy.? We've not looked at it that close yet to see if this is possible as with an offset companionway to starboard, it may not be possible to get all the lines over there without excessive angles. Right now it has a winch on the deck on either side of the mast with jammers that we want to replace with clutches.? The outhaul is on the boom and we'd like it to be led back to the cockpit as well as the reefing lines for the main trimmer.? Right now all the main trimmer can do is trim the main sheet and nothing else.
?
Other mods we'd like to make are adjustable car leads for the genoa.? Right now you can not adjust them under load.? We have non self tailing winches with cleats that ideally would be replaced with self tailors but for now we'll likely just remove the horn cleats and replace with cam cleats.
