Re: [Cal_Boats] Cal II-34 For Sale in South FL (Resend for all to see/read)
Chris,
The boat had no headsail. It looked as if something
impacted the headstay foil about 6 feet from the masthead. Looking at
the damage from the foredeck, I doubt that one could even bend a
headsail until it is repaired. Perhaps this was the result of hurricane Wilma or some other unnamed storm.
She
had a mainsail on the boom under cover. By the time I got to
inspecting that part of the boat, I had already decided that she was
not for me, so I have no idea as the the condition of the mainsail.
As for the standing rigging,
the lower/cap shroud thurnbuckles look as if they are original
considering the corrosion. I found a crack in the swaged fitting on
the backstay. The running rigging looked weathered and not trustworthy.
I
stomped around on and inspected the foredeck as best I could at the
time. I found nothing to indicate that it was soft. The ports &
deadlights appeard water tight, but that's TBD. The rub rail is
detaching in several spots. Stanchions and deck fittings need rebedding.
Below,
the upholstery was complete but weathered, and replacement is
warranted. The head has no holdinig tank; pumping directly out a
thruhull fitting. That's totally illegal here!
Electronics consist of a fixed VHF; condition unknown.
The
general condition of the boat indicates it has been a long time since
it was last cared for. The bilges and lockers were filthy.
However,
if the hull proved sound and one is willing to frugally invest $10-15K
after purchase, I think that this Cal may be a good buy.
My .02,
Michael
