Newbie Question on Cal 33- Loose propeller shaft strut.
bayboat192008-11-19 21:29
Hello,
I'm new to the Cal List and am considering purchasing a Cal 33 II. The survey showed some
issues, but one of the main ones was a prop strut and misaligned prop which was allowing
more water to get past the stuffing box then is normal. The prop strut could be moved a bit
by hand and would (according to the surveyor) cause vibrations and probably wear on the
cutlass bearing.
Does anyone on the list have experience with this sort of issue? Is this likely to be a costly
repair at a yard. (I am located in the general area of Annapolis)
TIA for any thoughts on this problem.
Richard

Richard, I forwarded your note to a couple guys I know in town who are
in the biz. We'll see what they have to say about repair complexity.
Where in the Annapolis area are you?
Cheers

I am Dan Faulkner's friend who referred you to that other Cal 33.? I didn't realize you were in the Annapolis area which is where I am as well.? I had a similar issue on my old CS 30.? I ground away the fairing compound and was able to put about 1.5 to 2 turns on the 4 bolts holding it to the hull. I went ahead and removed them one at a time and put?Loctite on them and?re-faired the strut.?
I can't remember the sequence of events but I also replaced the cutlass bearing, engine mounts (big $$) and stern tube.? I think I did that the season after tightening the strut.

Richard,
welcome to our site. The Cal 33 is a strong boat and sails very well.
I just replaced my strut and prop on my 1973 Cal 2-29. I do not know what your mechanical abilities are, however, it is a very easy job. We syaryed with the boay in the water then pulled it when we got the parts back. The boat had to be back in the water to align the the drive train.

Hi Charlie,
I live in Fairfax,VA, about an hour from the Bay, but the boat will be kept on the Bay, most
likely off of West River.
Thank you very much for your help on this question.
Where are you on the Bay?

Hi Mark,
I used Martec in Long Beach,, http://www.martec-props.com/
I figured it lasted this long maybe it will last another 40 years.
I had to send in my strut for them to pour a new one. it was a little beefier and everything lined up.
